Agreed

Yeah, I'm going to agree with the majority here: there's a lot more to like about the Spider-Man films (especially Spider-Man 2) than there is to dislike.

mdc3000 07-03-06 05:41 PM

No rewatch value? That made me laugh...I saw it at least 4 times in the theatre and have watched Spider-Man 2 countless times on DVD. I thought the first one was good, but the second one was GREAT and is probably one of my favourite films of the last few years. I can watch it whenever and enjoy every minute of it... and the trailer for Spider-Man 3 looks like Raimi and Co. will outdue themselves this time as well.

Awesome flick, watch it all the time...

GuruTwo 07-03-06 10:27 PM

"Spider-Man 2" is the perfect comic book movie and nothing else comes close, not "X2", not "Batman Begins", nothing.

RyoHazuki 07-04-06 03:59 AM

I like Spiderman 2. Its held up for me during repeated viewings. I disliked spidey 1 from day 1, however. Just a mediocre film all around.

sabre 07-04-06 06:21 AM

I think spiderman 2 is a great movie. but in terms of Rewatching Value, it's not that high on my personal list. It's a little depressing to see a guy with super powers have the crap kicked out of him by life for over half the movie. Everything goes wrong for the guy. It's kinda funny the first time you watch it in the movie theater but when repeated it's not that fun.

Jon2 07-04-06 12:51 PM

I'm not a big Spiderman (or Marvel) fan, but I did see both 1 and 2 in theaters and liked both. I have to say that S2 doesn't have much repeat viewing appeal to me, but then I've only Spiderman 1 twice.

Even though I have avoided watching it any time the opportunity presented itself, I did catch the last 30 minutes of S2 the other day, and I noticed something at the very end that escaped me when I saw it in the theater.

The "look" on MJ's face after Peter leaves. At first she looks happy, but then her expression changes ever so slightly and she looks anything but happy.

I do not recall seeing this in the theater and for some reason it bugs me a lot. If it was noticeable a TV screen, how could it be missed on something over 25 feet high? I have to wonder if they (digitally) changed her expression after the film's theatrical run to add a bit of foreshadowing about what is to happen in S3?

Rival11 07-04-06 01:03 PM

The first Spiderman was beyond terrbile. The second one was just plain goofy but at least it was better than the first.

The third one looks like will be the best and hopefully the last.

Obviously you can tell I don't really care for Spiderman.

That was most certainly in the movie in the theatrical cut, and one of the details that got it such a high rating.

Actually this isn't hating for the sake of hating, I am just part of a very small minority that didn't like the movie
I love character development, and I can take the emoness of Peter Parker since I read alot of Spiderman Comics.
It just seems to me Spiderman 2 character development consisted of a numb robot Toby Maguire standing teary eyed for most of the movie showing no feelings, I can't believe he is an actor in one of the biggest comic book franchises.

Same exact feelings. The bank fight is the best action sequence of the series and while I love Willem Dafoe, I perfered Molina's Doc Ock. But that's all I like about the movie.
The "To be or not to be a superhero" scenes aggravated the hell out of me considering they were done much better in Superman II when Supes becomes human. A friend of mine even said they should have called the movie "Aunt May II".

As time has gone on, the 1st movie feels the better-crafted to me.

I really doubt it.

ScandalUMD 07-04-06 03:47 PM

The bank robbery sequence is frankly the gold standard for this kind of action movie, and nothing in anything else really comes cloes.

But I don't think that the movie moved too slow or that there wasn't enough action. I know comic book fans know these stories backwards and forwards and just want to see the heroes fighting in big-budget FX glory, but that's really not who these are being made for.

These movies are about sucking away all the goofy space monster/time travel/parallel universe shit that relegates comics to a niche subculture of ur-geeks and finding the pop mythology at the center of them that has cultural relevance and broader appeal.

In the wrong hands, Spidey is just a freak in a gimp suit swinging through the air on strands of his on viscous jism. I think Raimi did a fantastic job of making him meaningful.

HE Pennypacker 07-04-06 05:24 PM

Totally agree with the OP. This film has no replay value whatsoever. I was forced into seeing it a second time in the theaters and didn't enjoy one bit of it.

See, I disagree here. The writing comes off like something you'd expect from a bunch of fresh college kids, it's terrible. The directing seems heavy handed sometimes and I don't think the costume design lends itself to live action. I know with the first one I couldn't get over how bad both Spider-man and Green Goblin looked. Then the second came around and I still couldn't get over how bad Spider-Man looks when he is just standing there talking. Maybe it is because you don't physically see a person underneath the outfit, but I just felt like it was a total cheese fest.

I think the first one was a total cheese fest, bad writing, poor acting and a terrible Macy Gray scene. The second was slightly better, but I don't understand why it gets all the praise that it does. At least with X-2, I understand what people see in it (even if I disagree).

Let's see what he brought us.

1: A miscasted Peter Parker.

2: A movie that doesn't even deal with Peter that much. All it does is make Peter out to be a whiney-emo idiot.

3: Two villains who had their orgins screwed up and not only that, but the first one had the worst outfit in the history of blockbuster films.

4: Organic webshooters. 'Nuff said.

5: Terrible writing and poor acting.

6: Two films that mirror the Donner Superman films so much it's not even funny.

This is the most idiotic post of 2006.

taa455 07-05-06 08:57 AM

Loved both part 1 and 2. I rewatch them often.

That's far from the most idiotic post of the year. Someone in Video Game Talk asked if PS2 games will work in a PS1 console. Someone in Other asked if showering in warm water will give him cancer. Those two are both more idiotic.

That was the only thing I really didn't like about the first movie. The Green Goblin, especially with that stupid looking mask on, looked like something out of the Power Rangers.

The Bus 07-05-06 10:26 AM

IMO:

X2
Batman Begins
Spider-man 2
X-Men
The Hulk
Spider-man

I think the second one is very rewatchable.

Should he have worn black leather?

Agreed. There is so much structural and concepts lifted from SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II that I was wondering if what I was seeing was homage or rip-off.

Yeah, because the comics are so terribly different.

I own the dvd, but I rarely watch it. It's something I throw on in thebackground and glance at from time to time.

They are different. But I'm not even talking about the comic book origin, or superheroics, but rather the pacing, structure and themes of the MOVIES themselves. The loss of powers, first appearance set-ups, unrequited love stories, dialogue, and so forth. (Actually, there are many other sites which document this better than me.)
