Superman or Superman II

With these Superman threads going around i thought it's the right time to bring this out. I've always wanted to ask which of these two do you like more, and since other polls included III and IV which weren't in the same league clearly, this is just between 1978's Superman: The Movie and 1980's Superman II, the real comparison. I pick Superman II, these two films are i think the greatest superhero movies ever with II being my favorite.

Here's what's in the DVD & Video Movie Guide 2006 out of 5 stars.
Superman ***½
"After a somewhat overblown introduction, which encompasses the end of Krypton and Clark Kent's adolescence in Smallville, this film takes off to provide some great moments as Superman swings into action. The action is complemented by fine tongue-in-cheek comedy."
I disagree with the adolescence part, those were my favorite parts of the film.

Superman II ****
"Even better than the original, this terrific adventure of the Man of Steel includes a full fledged - and beautifully handled - romance between Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and Superman (Christopher Reeve) and a spectacular battle that pits our hero against three supervillains (during which the city of Metropolis is almost completely destroyed)."

I liked the second one - just cause it was great to see Superman battle three villians. - with lots of stuff blowing up along the way.

and the particularily mean scene where the kid gets killed offscreen as he goes riding off for help.

I love the second, minus the stupid "Super Kiss". When or if they do a Returns sequel, they need to follow suit, the viewer wants to see Supers throw down with equally powerful villains.

I love II, but there's really no comparison.

No kidding. It seems like every 6 months we have one of these polls. And we'll be having them every 3 months after Superman Returns comes out.

BTW, I voted for the first Superman flick. I used to prefer II, but I saw the first one on the big screen for the first time ever when the Director's Cut was released in San Antonio 5 years ago(I don't know what the hell WB was thinking with that marketing strategy) and it blew me away. Yes, the world spinning backwards still makes no sense, but the rest of the movie is classic.

II is still a terrific sequel, but now that I know about Donner being fired and how Lester reshot a lot of the movie and was forced to use a double for Hackman in certain scenes, it's lost a lot of its luster. Plus the magic kiss ending is even worse than the world spinning backwards. It negates everything that happened in the previous 2 hours between Superman/Clark and Lois.

The first two Superman's were the best. Forget about 3 and 4 ever exist.

As a kid growing up in the 80's, I loved Superman II and thought it was better than the Original Superman. As I got older, I realized that the Original Superman is a classic now, but Superman II is still great.

I have to go with the first Superman.

I had too many problems with Superman II.

If all four of the Kryptonians (is that the right word?) are 'super' and basically invulnerable on our planet, how much sense does it make to have them go at it it in a big brawl that only results in damaging the city?

Also, Superman II contains one of the silliest moments - After the big brawl and it looks as though Superman has been defeated, someone yells out "they killed Superman, let's get 'em", at which point a group of people (whose IQs must have been smaller than their shoe sizes) begin to march toward the three super villians who they've just watched practically destroy Metropolis.

That's right up there with the old Superman show where a bad guy would empty his gun into the Man of Steel, with no effect, and then throw the empty gun at him.

Superman 2, faster paced story, better villians and cooler action.

Which one didn't involve Superman reversing time with the spin of the Earth?

While I prefer Superman, I do enjoy both and consider them a great double-feature.

I'll weasel out and call it a tie.

78 was an epic flick, but was hampered a bit by Lex Luthor being goofy-evil rather than evil-evil.

II is way cheesier, but General Zod is one of the great movie villains of all time.

You mean the midwestern kid with the British accent? I saw that scene years later, since I don't think it was in the original release. It was definitely a show-stopper.

yeah, wasn't the scene exclusive to the television cut of the film, wondering if it will get included in the upcoming special edition DVD 'Donnor cut' of the film.

Superman is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I can't vote against it. I just have many great memories watching it growing up and even today it is just as great a film.

That being said, I do still love to watch Superman II. It's got my fav villian from the Superman movies, General Zod. Terance Stamp just owned the role, as much as Chris Reeves owned the role of Clark/Superman.

I always preferred II - more exciting. I'm sure after seeing the Donner cut, I'll prefer II even more.
