Taxi Driver or Apocalypse Now Redux?

As somebody who's seen neither, I'm looking to purchase one of these shortly as a blind buy. Both have impressive legacies/reputations and I really have huge respect for Scorsese and Coppola as filmmakers. Which would you guys recommend for me first?

To give a sense of my taste for movies, my top 5 are:

The Godfather, Brokeback Mountain, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather II, The Fellowship of the Ring ... with honourable mentions going to Raging Bull, Almost Famous, and Mystic River.

As a filmmaker huh? Then I would recommend theatrical cut version of Apocalypse Now and if you can't find it Redux will do fine. AN is a beautiful film showing how far one's passion for filmmaking can go, well documented by "Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse."

Taxi Driver is also an excellent film but it's less technical in shooting than AN so that's my reason. BUT PLEASE! Just get both of them. :)

Jackskeleton 06-17-06 05:51 AM

yeah. Hearts of darkness really shows the nitty gritty behind it all and is amazing. I'd go with the original AN first though

I suggest buying Taxi Driver now. Apocalypse Now is getting a re-release with both films called the Complete Dossier - Special Collector's Edition in August.

They're both great, but yeah, if you're buying now, get TAXI DRIVER and go for the APOCALYPSE NOW: The Complete Dossier (which features both theatrical and Redux edits of the film) later this year.

Go to Blockbuster and rent both

I live in a Region 4 country so I'm not sure if we'll have the Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier Edition ... or at least not until much later after its Region 1 release.

I figured, since you said it so perfectly, why take the time to make up a new sentence. :D

I'd go with Taxi Driver. If I remember correctly I don't think I understood the end of Apocalypse Now.

Martin Sheen was actually dead the whole time.

Just buy them both. Taxi Driver is a discount title here in the states. It's just $10 or so.

If you REALLY can only buy one, get Apolocalypse Now. Didn't see the movie till I was 18, and it just blew me away. Great filmmaking. Abashingly FUN, cruel, dark, and poetic. The kind of movie I can get into an indepth conversation about.

The movie works a lucid level. It feels deep. It has a lot to say. But it's not just for the beret-wearing, coffee-drinking intellectuals (as opposed to A Space Oddesey). It's a movie that any average moviegoer can get something out of.

Enjoy.

Apocalypse Now, definately. I've only watched Taxi Driver once since I bought it. It was a decent movie, but nothing spectacular.
