*shudder*

... I just wish he'd "make change" with Moneypenny.

this was probably mentioned but I thought the weakest thing about the film was the opening/title song - what a completely unmemorable song.

But you do "know [his] name" right? ;)

Couple questions...

Just saw this. Excellent. Very tense throughout. Really, really well done. Craig was excellent and played the part with a very fresh verve. As much as I liked Brosnan, I look forward to more with Craig.

questions: Was there more backstory with
Spoiler:
Mr. White? Was he Le Chiffre's boss so to speak?
He was the one
Spoiler:
in the beginning with the terrorist, Mollaka
, correct? I just didn't quite get who he was.

Also, the first scene with James at the bar and he orders some mixed drink (not the martini) as this was brown, what was the joke when the two guy patrons were looking at him funny?

Thanks.

I believe he said something in German, exactly what I forget. The two guys were the same two guys who gave him the keys to their car, thinking he was a parking attendant. So they were looking at him funny because they recognized him, but here he was at the bar ordering a drink like a guest.

Casino Royale is the 4th best movie of the year IMO. I LOVED it. While I liked Superman Returns,Clerks II,and M:I III better it was still great. Long Live...

Bond. James Bond.

Mr. White is
Spoiler:
working for some sort of shadow organization that often called upon Le Chiffre for financial issues.

Speculation
Spoiler:
Said organization is SPECTRE (or SMERSH), and Blofeld will be introduced in the next film. Many fans seem to believe this is the direction they are going since Blofeld is Bond's second most famous villain after Goldfinger, and the major inspiration for Dr. Evil so most audiences are familiar with him.

ah that's it, thanks. i thought it was the martini gag i heard about, but then heard it later on in movie, but thought that was one as well.

I really enjoyed the film and was not expecting to. I really did like how bond showed blood and hurt after he got in fights. I liked Craig in the role as well and I was not expecting to. However, I did have some problems with it. No real spoilers.

The opening credits...where was the silhouette (sp?) of a woman? That's very bond, as much or more so than the shot looking down a gun barrell with the dripping blood.

The editing was a little...jerky maybe is the right word. At the end there were several cuts during and after the poker game that were quite confusing, I think the editing of those scenes could have been a whole lot better.

The poker. Why didn't they make the game believable for anyone who actually plays poker? Everything related to tells was way way WAY over the top and just stupid. The hands shown down were ridiculously too strong.
Spoiler:
I've been playing poker for years and I can count on one hand the number of straight flushes I have gotten...showing down a hand with 2 boats and a straight flush? Please it was just annoying.
Etc, etc.

No gadgets. Don't get me wrong, the stupid gadgets of recent films were just that, stupid. But I did not like that there weren't really *any* gadgets...that was a pretty big let down for me.

If this is somewhere in the thread, I apologize, but I don't want to read any spoilers...a friend and I are going to see this movie this afternoon, but we're in a time crunch. Will I miss anything major if I leave before the credits finish rolling? And for the record, I normally sit through all of the credits, today is just a different beast.

Thanks.

Well, there is the final message (in writing), but you've probably seen it written many times before. It's not really spoiler-worthy, but I'll do it anyway.

"James Bond will return."

That's it.

Sadly, I've never seen a Bond film before (ducks and runs), so I'm excited to see this one b/c I've heard good things. But you're right, that's not a spoiler at all. Thanks.

Finally saw this today. A few questions.

So the CIA agent at the poker table was legit? If so, how did they lose Le Chiffre? I'm bad with names, so when I heard that "Mathis" was in on it, I assumed it was the CIA guy. That made sense, since Le Chiffre apparently just walked out of the Casino and away from a waiting CIA.

Secondly, last I saw the case of money, it was floating in the water in the middle of a sinking building, then all of a sudden it's in Mr. White's hand?

Third, who was the guy with the glasses at the end? I was looking at him trying to see if it was Le Chiffre, but it certainly didn't look like him. Why would you introduce a character with glasses, blocking out an eye, when another main character in the movie has eye issues with the same eye? Or am I missing some sort of "in" joke.

And a question about poker, when someone goes all in, like in the last hand at the table, the first guy to go all in only has a million, or something paltry. All of a sudden, everyone's pushing their piles of 40 million into the center. When someone goes all in with less money than you, don't you just match their total?

Question 1) Yes the CIA man was legit. It was Felix Leiter, a reoccurring character from most of the pre-Borsnan Bond films. Mathis was the other person working with Bond (other than Eva green/Vesper Lynd). It was also believed that Mathis was a double agent.

Question 2) I can't specifically remember, so I'll let someone else answer

Question 3) I'm not sure I remember this either. Are you talking about the man Bond shot? He was the man above Le Chiffre (who was dead), presumably part of some evil organization (SPECTRE/SMERSH?). I can't recall if he had glasses or not.

I can answer the poker question. When someone goes all in, yes you only have to match that person. But if more than two people are playing, you can play for side pots over the initial bet. So when player one goes all in, player two still has to bet with players three and four in mind. So if player one goes all in with one million, the max he can win from everyone else is one million. But the remaining players can still bet between themselves with the chips they have left.

Ok, so how did Le Chiffre get away? The CIA just let him go on his merry way after they were given the ok to take him in?

As for #3, I'm not sure about the details now, but when Bond and his Gal are on the boat in Venice, you see a flash of him on the sidewalk, wearing glasses with the left eye blacked out. He's later involved in what goes down with the case of money.

I guess I just need to watch it again.

Rizor 02-04-07 09:34 PM

For #3, he's just another dude that works for the organization. Seriously, it never occured to me that people might think he was the same guy as Le Chiffre. Just because one guy cries blood and the other guy has a funny eye patch thingy, it never really seemed like that big of a connection to confuse people. :) But, no, they're the same guy. The dude at the end is named Gettler. He has that eye thing because that's how Fleming described him. I guess the filmmakers thought along the same lines as I did and never thought of it as a problem.

Re: Casino Royale Trailer is up

So they're showing this on USA a lot these days (recent debut), and I frankly forgot just how involving it is. Just a really well made flick.

Why did Quantum have to turn out the way it did :(

Re: Casino Royale Trailer is up

I appreciate Quantum Of Solace more every time I watch it. That said, Casino Royale was flat out great, even if the poker hands were over-the-top.

Re: Casino Royale Trailer is up

Yeah, the final poker hand was hilariously over the top, but the rest of the movie was top notch.

Quantum ... I just really hate how many great ideas there were in it and how poorly it turns out.

Travis McClain 06-07-09 12:20 AM

Re: Casino Royale Trailer is up

I was tempted to defend Quantum of Solace for doing the best job of any of the Bond movies to capture Ian Fleming's sense of pace and fairly plausible, yet fantastic plots...but then I realized I would be doing so in a thread announcing the trailer for Casino Royale.

You've made almost 60 nonsense posts in a little over 2 hours and managed to contribute absolutely nothing of any substance. Couldn't you take your boredom somewhere else?
