true but it still factors in... oh well... it will be lucky to break $200 mil.

Draven, the thing is that it was never a factor in all his adventures... that change is horrible... if Lois died... then thats different... its like if Spiderman was a dad... that would suck to... change is good... but not good for the movie.

if singer wrote this story... singer is to blame.

Destoyed along with the other Kryptonian Kryminals() in Superman 2?
Were they killed in 2? Its not clear. He throws them down the chutes in the theaterical version, and in the cut Donner scenes, the Arctic Patrol arrest them! So in either version, it is presumable to think they survived.

I guess my biggest problem with the movie is they had Superman leave for 5 years with no explanation, besides wanting to see Krypton...it doesn't make sense given that his father presumably told him that Krypton was blown to smithereens, and given Supe's attitudes towards Earth and Lois - why would he just get up and leave?

So you had a return in the movie, but no reason for the departure. I guess it doesn't make much sense to me.

Did you know that Superman didn't fly in his first comic appearances? "Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" and all that? Was that an okay change for you?

The movie series has created it's own mythology and the kid fits directly into the events laid down by "Superman 2." I cannot understand why it's so important to people that "Returns" is solely based on the comic books. The books are a MESS and have been for years. I'd rather see new stories than watch rehashed comics onscreen.

My bad. I've only seen the Theatrical version. At least I left it open by ending the it with a "?". So I'm covered.

Dude, what bigger reason than seeing Krypton's remains and having a small hope that someone could be out there does he need? Again, I didn't see that other version but let us not forget that until the Phantom Zone was broken and the 3 Kryminals(:p) were released in Superman II, Kal had no reason to believe any other Kryptonians were alive. But there were obviously at least 3 still alive. Anyway, I think that's plenty reason to take a trip. Plus, as I've mentioned before, it sets up the, "I'm the only one of my kind" part of the story. I don't think it was ever implied that Kal left never to come back; or that the only reason he returned was there was nothing out there. Give 'em a break. That Fucker was homesick.

-rolleyes- If Singer made this version of Superman a black rapper who was hit by a lightning bolt that gave him the power to fight crime with his magical maracas in his yellow jumpsuit and matching feather boa, then you might have a valid comparison.

something new obviously didnt work....

Draven 07-17-06 03:27 PM

Okay, seriously...

"Transformers" is sounding more and more like "Transformers in name only".

You cannot watch "Superman Returns" and think "that's not Superman." You just can't, and nothing you say will convince me that "Returns" isn't true to the spirit of Superman, even if they have created their own storyline. Just like...oh, I don't know - EVERY SINGLE COMIC STORYLINE EVER.

raven56706 07-17-06 03:35 PM

agreed but it dont matter..... at first i had a problem with brandon being superman... after watching the movie it was ok... but the story was crap... it is looking to be a dud and that sucks because i always saw superman as the spiderman of DC... but i guess Batman has taken over...

Like I said before, it's not just about changing aspects from the comic. I had no problems with changes made in X-Men, Spider-Man, or Batman. It's changes that just feel out of place and uninteresting. I'd rather see new stories too; just not boring ones involving Superman fathering a child or Lex with a plan that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Exactly. Too bad the movie didn't develop this subtext further. Oh, well. The DVD will probably add back these scenes.

Also, to all bitching about Superman's Son. There are at least 2 times where Batman was given a child in the DC Comics and there may be a 3rd time which is related to one of the other times. ;):p

I think Brian Singer "Killed Superman" like how Joel Schumacher "Killed Batman" with Batman and Robin.

Cripes! Someone is prone to hyperbole! No matter how you didn't like it, B&R is one of the shittiest films ever made. There really is no comparison.

This is one of the first posts on this film where I didn't think "armchair movie critic wannabe" or "fanboy."

I agree, this scene could have been shortened, and all that would be missed are a few comic beats.

Spoiler:
Batman is human...and has been known to bang a chick or two.

Wow - according to "Superman II," Supes has too!

I saw it again today, and I thought it held up quite well to a repeat viewing, but this scene is the one that should have been cut more than any other (as of right now).

Patman 07-18-06 11:15 PM

I've now seen SR in 2 different states and 2 different countries, and it still holds up well for me on successive viewings.

well thank the lord it wasnt in the movies... ;)

Damed 07-19-06 07:59 AM

Saw this last night.

As a HUGE superman fan, I can say that it's as good a film as we could have hoped for. I commend Singer for doing a great job, and making me believe a man can fly.

It should have been, as apparently the comics are supposed to be the end all be all for these characters.

Out of curiousity, how was the audience reaction?

Excited, or catatonic?

I love how you keep harping on that point when it's been said that it isnt just about adhering to the comics. Is it that hard to accept that people dislike the movie?

Probably just as hard as it is to accept that people love it. ;)
