I like it by itself, as it fleshes out their relationship, but I wouldn't want to see it back in the the movie. It would totally disrupt the flow of the opening. You know, the whole "droids to Luke, Luke to Ben, Ben to Han" thing they've got going on.

These scenes start off the Radio drama presentation of Star Wars. The radio version expands the relationship of Biggs and Luke a little bit more in other parts as well with respect to the movie.

Very interesting why on Earth is it not on the DVD.

The Infidel 05-20-06 12:11 AM

The first part of that clip looks like it was filmed in the 1920's! I halfway expected to hear a piano playing Luke's theme ragtime-style.

My favorite deleted scene is the one with C3P0 and Luke in the landspeeder. That was bad.

Wow, kind of cool to see that at last. And to realize that bad acting has always been a part of the Star Wars universe. Yeesh!

I hear it was cut because it ran against the storytelling structure used for the opening of the film, namely that the story simply follows the droids until they meet Luke for the first time. With this scene in, the movie would've instead cut away from the battle to introduce Luke - and then cut back to the droids escaping. Although it would've worked okay with the scene in, the movie works better without it.

Was it the introduction to Luke? I thought it would have been after they got the droids, where Owen told Luke he could go and spend time with his friends after he got his chores done, which was where he cleaned the droids up and saw the message. Then he came back later in the evening and R2 had gone off. It's been a while since I read the comic book, but that's how I always pieced the deleted scene in.

I think the battle he sees above him is Vader's Star Destroyer overtaking Leia's ship. By the time his friends look thru the binocs, they are already docking, so the fighting has stopped.

And who knew old Uncle Owen was handy with a blaster?

My first time seeing it to. Thanks OP!

Never seen it before.........thanks a lot!!

Yes, it would've been the introduction to Luke, due to him seeing the opening battle above, but I think it could've also been edited in the way you describe. It would've been a little out of chronological sequence, but I think it still would've worked fine.

I see how it fits in now. It's obviously before the introduction of the droids, since the one that Luke was using broke down right in the first scene.

There's a really great documentary using those scenes and other deleted scenes called "Deleted Magic ".

More info at http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum...&threadid=1284

The creator has put it up on myspleen.net for torrent download.

Never seen that either, thanks. Ohhh btw, be careful you might give Lucas the idea of releasing this star wars again with that same quality of picture. :)

Just need to see ESB and ROTJ delete ones and I've lived my life

rennervision 05-23-06 06:46 PM

An interesting scene, but the pacing would have brought the film to a screeching halt. I understand why it had to be cut, even though Luke references it later in a conversation with Uncle Owen.

Now if someone could just explain to me why the Empire was drafting young men when they had a clone army. I thought Lucas already had episodes I to VI written, so he knew the stormtroopers were clones - right? :)

Fanboy 05-24-06 01:17 PM

Anyone know who plays the girl? To quote Luke, "Who is she? She's beautiful."

Waited a long time to see that, ever since I saw some of it once at a friends house about ten years ago before the re-release of the PT.

I really do wish those were available on DVDs, just to show that the first SW could have almost been a totally different movie; for better or for worse remains up for debate.

Check out Deleted Magic that I linked to in my earlier post. It has these scenes and many, many more. It even includes a cut of the Death Star trench battle as scripted, which is quite different than the finished product. That scene alone shows how it was almost a different movie.
