OK, this demands some explanation. That is a scene I'd rather not see ever again, so how does it become your "favorite"?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:

Harry is waiting for his father to appear and save the day... but Hermione tells him no one is coming, and he and Sirius are dying... and then the truth dawns on him as he takes his wand, runs forward, the music swelling, and yells with full power and intention, "EXPECTO PATRONUM!!!"

Charles Kane tearing apart his wife's bedroom in Citizen Kane.

The last minute or two of Heat (it's better than the shootout).

The 'who are you' duel and 'reveal' at the end of Once Upon a Time in the West.

This is stupid. I hate lists. Bah'.

Oooo. I'm also obsessed with a short sequence in the Miami Vice movie. It starts when they're on the fast boats, before the trailer-park rescue scene. Right after Foxx says "that's the first thing they did", there's a great bit of shots, with a great score. Michael Mann really knows how to do it.

Haha. You're awesome.

After the dude got his face bashed in with a tank, the rape didn't seem to bad. I remember not knowing anything about the movie. And the face-bashing actually scared and shocked me. I think the impact was more because I was actually confused about the movie, and had no idea where it was going. After a couple hits, I actually looked away from the screen, not knowing exactly what I was watching. Then, after it gets real bad, the CG was noticable. I'll never forget looking away, temporarely questioning, 'what the fuck did I just buy?'

Blackhawk Down - The scene where the Deltas come up quietly on the gun in the jeep/car and proceed to take the crew out and then turn the gun on the other warlord, then blow it up as they are walking away.

Saving Private Ryan - taking the beachhead

We Were Soldiers - Final attack scene where the men charge then drop down as the helicopters come in and start mowing down the enemy (the music was great in this sequence too)

And the one that fits the OP's criteria to a T:
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - the scene where Jeesica Biel is changing out of her wet clothes in front of Sandler... let's face it the rest of the movie was indeed filler around that one scene!

These don't fit the specific criteria of one great scene propping an otherwise "meh" movie, but they are great scenes nonetheless.

Almost Famous - Tiny Dancer. Best use of music within a movie I've ever heard.

Once Upon a Time in the West - The opening scene, including the whole section with no dialog, and Bronson's classic line regarding the quantity of horses.

Edward Scissorhands - "Hold Me." ....... "I can't."

Lost in Translation - The ending

Garden State - The pet graveyard scene

I'm guilty as well. I'm going to plea ignorance and say the thread title shouldn't be so vague. "Favorite single scene" is more interesting than "Movies that are built around one great scene" anyway. And look, how hard was that coming up with a descriptive title? ;)

Furthermore, "Favorite single scene" implies one, yet everyone is making lists of scenes. This thread is officially FUBAR.

Going off the OP's criteria I would have to go with Rudy. IMO, a boring, predictable movie that has a great ending that - while still predictable - would make a robot stand up and cheer.

Also, the final scenes where he tricks the Pres and brings about the downfall of civilization were pretty cool.

This is a great scene, and you've piqued my interest regarding the technical correctness of it. I'm no expert - but it seems that Tom makes a mistake with his second move. The first move is grabbing the bad guy's gun hand and pushing it right towards him (the bad guy) and away from Tom (i.e. where it can do no harm) while unholstering his own gun. In the second movement, Tom pulls the bad guy's arm (still holding the gun and presumably with his finger still on the trigger) in a sweep back to the left, which allows the bad guy's gun barrel to traverse Tom's midsection (big mistake IMHO). Ideally, in the second movement, I think he would have continued the first move of pushing the gun towards the bad guy while bringing his own gun up over his (Tom's) left arm and firing at the bad guy's chest. Then he would proceed to cap the second guy. An even more efficient move would have been to shoot the second guy first and then the first guy (since he had the first guy's gun pinned) as he brought his gun up from the right.

To Live and Die in L.A. - If you have seen the movie, you know what scene I am talking about. To actually say it would be to spoil it.

Blade Runner - When the dove flies away.

Fear and Loathing has some great scenes, personally i would maybe say the scene in the elevator with Cameron Diaz. Benecio goes ape shit at the reporter guy and it cracks me up every time.

Excalibur....that is a great scene. I have been waiting forever for this movei to get a good release. Such an awesome movie and cast.

To Live and Die in LA....i am sure i know which scene you are on about but i really love the scene in this movie where Willem Dafoe is making the funny money.

Bladerunner...well the whole rooftop scene at the end for me is my favourite scene of all time. I have watched it again this weekend and it never gets boring.

Another i would like to add is the whole light sabre scene between Luke and Vader at the end of Empire. That fight really is the best in the series.

Jaws

"You're gonna' need a bigger boat."

That's basically the entire movie in one single line.

-----------

My favorite single scene from a movie (by my own criteria):

Boogie Nights

The Punisher, Dirk Diggler, and John C. Reilly rip off Dr. Octopus for all his dope money. It's just a great big shoot 'em up scene with firecrackers, fabulous facial hair, a little Asian guy named Cosmo who wears man-panties, and fucking NIGHTRANGER.
