The Sentinel (Opens April 21st)
Starring Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Eva Longoria, Kim Basinger and David Rasche.
Directed by Clark Johnson Who's psyched to see this movie? Douglas and Sutherland in the same movie should make an interesting combination. Being a huge 24 fan, this movie looks like it has alot of elements from the series. I predict this will open between 20-25 million this weekend. |
Looks bland to me.
I like what Chiusano, a poster on another board I frequent, had to say. He loves Sledge Hammer! and 24, so having Jack Bauer protecting Sledge is just the bee's knees to him.

Saw a trailer for this before Scary Movie 4 (no flaming :) ) and I was the only one out of a bunch of people that wanted to see this. I think it looks awesome, but I think the trailer is pretty poor. Even the title screams mediocrity, but I trust Kiefer and Douglas that I think it willl kick ass.
|
The trailer was okay, but I'm a huge fan of Douglas, so I'm in.

Keifer makes this a must see for me. Not to mention that Clark Johnson is a very solid director (his work on The Shield etc.) so I'm definitely going to be there on opening night.

I would love to see this movie and dig Sutherland and Douglas, but i hate that **** hoar Longoria. I hope the movie bombs becuase of her. I cant say how much I detest that ugly bitch; but if anyone else here is from SA or Texas, they probably understand why.

She's not even one of the main characters of this movie. If you are really disgusted by her sight than fine (I don't know why you would be), but I'm will see this movie for Douglas and Sutherland.

Looks like pretty standard stuff: Top secret service agent framed and set up by someone on the president's staff who is the actual traitor.
|
Well shes ALWAYS shoved down the throats of everyone here in San Antonio. The news paper puts her ass on the front page to say shes in town, whos shes fucking, buying a house, all this crap. Than theres that cop incident and her interviews AT EVERY MAJOR SPURS game.
Trust me, its sickening. People have wrote into our local news paper (Express News) to complain that theyre tired of her and dont care. Her crap belongs in the tabloids and not in the serious city paper. Alot of people here dont like her. |

What's funny is that on Fox this movie is about Keifer's mentor possibly being a traitor and his quest to bring Douglas down. On other stations and in theatrical trailers, it's about Michael Douglas being wrongfully accused and doing The Fugitive thing.
|
The film is based on the novel by Gerald Petievich, who also wrote "To Live and Die in L.A.". I enjoyed the book several years ago, but I think the trailer and clips I've seen look nothing special. Something I might fit in if I get caught up on several other films in town.

i cant wait, keifer kicks ass

Well, it's setting at 26% at rottentomatoes.com, based on 19 reviews.

Ebert's 3-star review here.
Have I seen movies like "The Sentinel" before? Yes, and I hope to see them again. At a time when American audiences seem grateful for the opportunity to drool at mindless horror trash, it is encouraging that well-crafted thrillers are still being made about characters who have dialogue, identities, motives and clean shirts. |
Jack Bauer rules! Longoria with a gun acting serious: I don't buy it. Will be seeing this movie this weekend just for the Bauer factor.
|
The trailer was okay, but I'm a huge fan of Douglas, so I'm in. Plus EL as eye candy can't hurt either  |
Ugh. I thought it was terrible. It's basically a standard formula thriller made of patchwork parts of better movies, except it couldn't even get the formula right. Pacing is horrible...
Spoiler:
The whole story is silly. Dumb plot point after dumb plot point was trotted out. It was just a string of foolishness and cliches. Spoiler:
Characters and their actions are preposterous. Spoiler:
|
^ So based on your non-spoiler comments, this is basically a two-hour episode of 24?
Also, if they're going to remake a TV show, where are the super senses for Michael Douglas, dammit? It's like how they destroyed Cronenberg's Crash in the remake by limiting it to one car accident and making it about racism. :) |
Spoiler:

I saw this tonight and really enjoyed it. I kept expecting Keifer to torture someone for information but no luck there. Still a fun and entertaining ride.
:) A solid grade of B. |
Well, I thought the film was too short in the character development department, and the middle act is just unbelievably underwritten, but the last act was okay. I picked up the traitor pretty early, but it doesn't really matter for this sort of genre, I guess. For a 2 hour popcorn flick, it did an average job.
So, I give it 2 stars or a grade of C. |
I have no idea why this movie has gotten such bad reviews. To me it's like one of those 130 minute movies you watch and say "That would be so much better if they took all the crap out and made it 20 minutes shorter." Well, they did!
I saw the 10:00 showing tonight and it was packed so I guess the bad review(er)s aren't turning everyone off. |

It was average.
It was entertaining. I liked it. I took a five minute break to go to the bathroom and I didn't miss anything important. I have never seen 24 but I liked Kiefer and Michael's characters. (I know that Michael doesn't star in 24) |
It was 4$ and 2hours I should have done something else with, I know that much. 24 has set the bar too high!
|
I saw it last night and hated it. IMO, the dialogue was beyond awful and the "funny" lines were groan-inducing, and not in a good way.
I'd definitely pass on this in the theaters - it's at best a rent. |
I saw it today and thought it was good, not great. The plot was pretty predictable and I figured out who the traitor was in the first 30 minutes of the movie.
The movie could have been a little better if Kiefer would have played Breckinridge with the same intensity as Jack Bauer. However, after playing Jack Bauer for 10 months, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a little run down while filming this movie. Longoria's role wasn't really needed. Overall, the movie has very little replay value. I would only get the DVD if Douglas or Sutherland contribute to the audio commentary. Otherwise, I will pass on seeing this again. |
I saw this movie today and I have to agree with the above post. Call me a pervert but I Was hoping to see some more of Eva Longoria if you know what I mean. She did not have a major role at all and the one or two cleavage shots were barely enough to make up for this. She plays a rookie, and is frequently kept quiet by her superiors, and never really offers much. I also was a bit confused about the villian, they did not give any history of the villian except for that he was inolved with the KGB, or why he wanted the assassination. I thought the days of blaming the Russians were over?
|
This isn't a movie you actively try to watch. It's a movie you wind up half-following because it's on TNT at 3 in the morning and you can't sleep so, hey, why not.
|
i saw it tonight. didn't think it was great, but it wasn't bad. i was entertained teh whole through though i didn't like the twist.
|
Very predictable, but I enjoyed it anyhow. Keifer and Douglas are great and the one scene where they really go toe to toe was worth the admission price. I didn't like some of the stylistic choices early on in the film, but they thankfully just seemed to disappear. Of course, the fact that the finale took place in Toronto (actually playing itself, not standing in for Detroit or something) brought MY personal enjoyment up... overall, if you've got time to kill, check out a matinee, otherwise, wait for disc.
MATT |
I just rented and watched this movie. It was OK I guess. Nothing really suspenseful or surprising, ... unless you count finding out Sledge Hammer is the President of the United States! -eek-
I saw David Rasche's name in the opening credits, but when my wife and I saw he was the President, she said she could no longer take the movie seriously. |
This film is the family-friendly version of the immensely superior In The Line of Fire. If it wasn't for the

I actually just rented this.
I REALLY enjoyed it. I was shocked because I had heard so many people didn't like it. I hated In The Line Of Fire...so...yeah. And I've never seen 24. |
Every time I see this thread I keep thinking someone else has done an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's short story "The Sentinel."
|
i enjoyed it, yeah, it was predictable, but i still liked it.....
