About A Boy

About A Boy

Twice now, I've caught bits, and pieces of this movie. For some reason it annoys the hell out of me, and I don't even know what it's about.

Would I not be so annoyed if I watched the whole thing?
Or is this one of the worse movies ever?

dick_grayson 04-04-06 04:08 PM

I think it's a great movie with a brilliant script. The music is also quite good.

Great movie - with Hugh Grant at his least foppish. You can also watch it with a girl.

Maybe you're scared that the ending will make you cry; and are making a pre-emptive strike?

Filmmaker 04-04-06 04:12 PM

Surprisingly good movie, with a rather cheeseball (a la the ending of JERSEY GIRL) ending, and it gets bonus points for featuring one of U2's greatest songs ("Zoo Station") in a key scene.

DonnachaOne 04-04-06 04:14 PM

Great movie, brilliant script, but the kid's eyebrows bug me.

Yes.

The only reason I do not own this DVD, or ever think I will watch it again?

The kid's eyebrows.

Bugger looks like a mongoloid Spock.

One of my all time favorites. I loved just about everything about this one, script, acting (Grant pretty much plays himself), the message, music, etc...

RichC2 04-04-06 04:52 PM

Enjoyed the flick as well, and it's from the directors of American Pie.

DGibFen 04-04-06 05:59 PM

Great flim. Plus women like it, so that's a plus if you need a good movie for a date night that won't leave you wishing you were dead.

Achtung 04-04-06 06:10 PM

Yeah, its a really, really good flick, as most Nick Hornby adaptations are. Maybe you just need to watch it start to finish. It starts out kind of standard fare, but it gets better.

LorenzoL 04-04-06 06:18 PM

I was pleasantly surprised (in a good way) the first time I watched this movie. I feel that this was one of the strongest performance by Hugh Grant.

finally saw it two nights ago and i agree, great flick. looking forward to american dreamz.

Great movie. Great book.

pelenor 04-04-06 07:17 PM

Great movie.

Marcus (Thinking as he and his mother go to lunch with Hugh Grant): I thought mom looked great.

Hugh Grant (thinking): Marcus' mother showed up wearing spme sort of Yeti costume.

Not verbatim, but I laughed and smiled throughout the movie.

I don't normally go for Hugh Grant movies but I love this one. It's much smarter and funnier than you might think. I really enjoy this movie.

Sean O'Hara 04-04-06 07:30 PM

I thought the movie was great until the ending. Then I read the book and discovered that -- surprise, surprise -- the whole talent show thing was invented by Hollywood. Hornby's ending was so much better that after reading the book I've downgraded by opinion of the movie. Still worth watching, but if you find it even halfway entertaining you should check out the book.

Loved both as well. The book is better than the movie, but the movie was a good adaptation aside from the ending.

EdTheRipper 04-04-06 09:56 PM

Very good movie.

Daytripper 04-04-06 10:04 PM

This was a great GREAT movie. Hugh Grant's best performance. Fantastic soundtrack. And an Academy Award nominated screenplay. Oh, and the always amazing Toni Collette. Doesn't hurt that it's based on a book from one of my favorite authors ;)

I found myself watching this again today, this time on USA as I was just flipping through the channels. It has a certain type of charm to it that makes it so that I can pretty much watch it at any given moment.

Giantrobo 04-05-06 01:04 AM

About a Boy is one of my favorites.

Toni Collete + Rachel Weisz + same movie = Robo:D

The menu and the long intro to the menu sucks too.

I loved that line also but I remember it more like:

Marcus (thinking): ...and mom was wearing that hairy jumper I liked.

Hugh Grant (thinking): ...(yada, yada) she was wearing what appeared to be a yeti costume.

Of course my wife and I do that line so often, I'm sure I've totally mangled it.
