Universal Pictures will scare up a new version of its horror classic The Wolf Man, with Benicio Del Toro playing the title role, reports Variety.

Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker has begun writing the script. Scott Stuber, Rick Yorn, Mary Parent and Del Toro will produce.

Like the 1941 original that starred Lon Chaney Jr., the new film will be set in Victorian England. Del Toro will play a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

Walker spent several months working on some frightening new twists to a familiar tale, adding several characters and plot points that take advantage of cutting-edge visual effects technology.

Walker will turn in his first draft by the spring, and the producers and studio are optimistic that The Wolf Man will shoot early in 2007, after Del Toro completes Guerrilla, the Che Guevara film being directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The expectation is that The Wolf Man will be a summer 2008 tentpole.

Since UNDERWORLD I've been really into Werewolves and werewolf lore and Del Toro is cool.

Question: Is there a difference between a Wolf Man and a Werewolf? Or is it the same thing?

And the best part is that Benicio will require almost NO make-up to look believable in the role!

This sounds great. The Wolf Man is my favorite Universal monster. Del Toro definitely has a wolf-like appearance. Wonder who's gonna direct.

Sounds intriguing ..... but I'd be more excited if it was a double-Del Toro, with Guillermo directing Benicio.

Sounds cool. As mentioned, Del Toro will make a great Wolf Man.

As long as it is not like Van Helsing (CGI overload, bad acting and script), it should be ok. I thought Universal did a pretty good job with the Mummy remake.

Knowing Universal, I'd guess Stephen Summers has been contacted.

I think they learned their lesson with Van Helsing. I hope there is no cgi makeup effects involved for this. It worked pretty well in The Mummy, but I want him covered in makeup and actually look like a wolf man instead of a giant creature.

Still a while off, but Del Toro has me sold, and he won't need much make-up, though I hope it's a better job than the CGI overload of Helsing. Heck, I also hope they do more than just give him excessive facial hair like they did with Jack Nicholson in Wolf.

eh. Oddly, the Wolfman has technically never been remade, but this seems weird. I'll wait till I'll see a trailer.

Remember Wolf?

Well, there's this:

Walker spent several months working on some frightening new twists to a familiar tale, adding several characters and plot points that take advantage of cutting-edge visual effects technology.
Shouldn't it be creating effects for the sake of plot points, not the other way around?

Interestingly, according to the Rodriguez/Miller commentary track on Sin City, Del Toro's always wanted to play The Wolf Man!

I don't think I've ever enjoyed any movie or TV show involving werewolves or a wolf man. Guess it just doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah but Andrew Kevin Walker is one hell of a writer and I'm always there opening day for Benicio.
