looks hilarious!...anyone else looking forward to it?

I went to a screening tonight. About 300 of us got shut out. I showed up 90 mins early too. Oh well, I'll check it out this weekend.

I'll try and see it. I'm not a HUGE rap fan (but do like some)...but tended to enjoy the musical guests on Chapelle's Show.

How much of this consists of musical performances and how much is Chapelle? I'm more interested in his comedy. Also, was this shot before or after his incident in Africa?

I just can't see Michel Gondry directing it. For some reason it does not seem to be his kind of movie.

I think I read on AICN that it was around 30% comedy 60% music

was hoping for 90% comedy... 10% music....

I love Dave Chappelle. I really enjoy hip hop too, but i don't like the artists involved (Kanye, Fugees, Common, Mos Def, Eryka Badu, etc), so I doubt I ever see this unless it comes on some cable channel in the future.

How can you "really enjoy" hip-hop and not like any of those artists?

They are all such bland artists. Its like if rap was breakfast cereal, they would be the generic bag of puffed wheat.

Nelly, P.Diddy, and The Big Tymers are all examples of the generic rap out there right now.

I 2nd that notion. I'm gonna watch the movie just to see Mos Def and Talib Kweli on stage.

The artists like Mos, Talib and The Roots are the ones ensuring originality in the hiphop scene, turn on MTV, close your eyes for an hour and see if you can make out the difference between the crap played, it's all club music designed to have catchy beats and sell albums, no originality in lyrics or style. I for one can't wait to see this, and am even more excited to see what Gondry did with it.

are you kidding??? the ones you named are anything but generic and in fact have taken rap and hip hop to the next levels of music. the fugees, mos, common and especially kanye have transcended the genre and all of them are incredible lyricists who i could never get tired of listening to. they are the god damn strawberry frosted mini-wheats of cereal. and this is coming from someone who is probably as generic as they come...me!

Oh no, not the dumbest of the year. I'd say this qualifies for dumbest of the millenium so far.

In addition to those acts already mentioned in this thread, there's nothing at all generic or bland about The Roots, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, and there's simply no better singer around today than Jill Scott, nor one with a more unique mix of styles and abilities. This is an all-star show of only the most serious and top-notch musicians in hip-hop.

I think dadahola must be thinking of that other block party featuring Black Eyed Peas, 50 Cent, and P. Diddy.

Well i don't know about P Diddy or 50 Cent but I would definitely put them into the same category with Black Eyed Peas. They are not playing Chappelle's Block Party too?

Caught the matinee. A really good doc. It does have it's moments of humour (Chappelle is in top form for sure) but make no mistake, this is a concert film. All the stuff that is not music, is mostly, in one way or another, pertaining to music, so if you don't care for it, be warned. I LOVE the acts that took part in this (except not a fan of E. Badu) and the concert footage is pretty great. Dead Prez, Mos and Talib, The Roots, Kanye and Common etc. all blow the roof off the mother and this film really conveys just how SPECIAL this moment in time was, and all the LOVE that went into making it happen...just incredible stuff. Well worth seeing for fans of hip hop and Chappelle....

and I'll second the comments that these artists are ANYTHING BUT generic...they're leading the forefront and have reshaped the hip hop landscape....

saw this yesterday...didn't like it as much as i thought i would mainly because i was hoping for more comedy...the music takes center stage but what comedy it does have is very funny (the "hit me" bit was great)
