No, but I doubt the proportion of new releases that are either sequels or remakes has ever been higher. And studios are extremely unwilling to take a chance on something new that's not designed to generate a "franchise". A movie like The Matador with a major star and the proper audience-maximizing smattering of sex and violence would have been much more heavily promoted 10 years ago.

You make a fair point, but I think people see more sequels and remakes simply because there are much more movies made today, for both the theater and for the straight-to-home-entertainment lines. I do agree that there seem to be more than usual, or that I'd like, but crying "Hollywood has run out of ideas! The movies are dead!" simply because they're remaking ____ or giving the audiences a sequel to a film they enjoyed is simply silly.

Also, a lot of the films mentioned that might have silly-sounding hooks might turn out to be brilliant. Who would have guessed that a movie about a 40-year-old trying to lose his virginity would be one of the sweetest, funniest and best movies of the year? I'd say for each one of those stupid-sounding loglines, there's a movie that sounds like a surefire hit that'll turn out to be just plain bad.

I think The Matador's underexposure was because it was the victim of award-baiting. The Weinsteins don't have too many movies under their belt yet and probably wanted to get as many nominations this year as they could, starting The Matador off slow in case Brosnan got a nod; it's certainly a hard film to sell to today's crowd. At my theater we've had no-one but small groups of seniors seeing it.

Daddy Day Camp
In this sequel to Eddie Murphy's Daddy Day Care, the actor will again star as Charlie Hinton, who in the first film founded a day-care center after being laid off from his corporate job. This time around, he's put in charge of a summer camp. The script is being written by the team behind Toy Story.
Release Date: TBA 2004

Are they going to take the movie back to 2004 when a time machine is finally invented?

Nothing wrong with remakes and sequels per se, but c'mon, most of the movies on that list are complete and utter shit. I blame the studios for not being more selective. If you're going to bankroll a remake at least make it a decent one. More Batman Beyond or King Kong and less Big Mama's House 2.

Well, if you look at the box office for the past weekend, The Pink Panther and Final Destination 3 were #1 & #2.

Like I always say, as long as people go see films such as these, Hollywood will continue to churn them out.

Thank God for indie film!

Final Destination 3 is a perfect example of why these sequels get made. It is a much less risky business decision. You know from the first 2 approximately what to expect from a 3rd film. So budget accordingly (hire no stars and don't go crazy promoting it) and you are guaranteed to make money.

I think we would all sign up for guaranteed money. It is not about making great movies, its about making money. The stockholders require you to make profit.

Gay Secret Agent
A flamboyantly gay secret agent (Brendan Fraser) has much success in the world of espionage, thanks to his great dancing and style.
Release Date: TBA 2005/2006

Too bad this is probably BS. It sounds cute in a Birdcage way.

Well, those all sound slightly higher quality than -

Taking the genre to new lengths, Japan's Toei has unfurled Exte, a horror pic about hair extensions that attack the women that wear them.

The film, which is one of half-dozen titles lined up at Berlin by Toei, directed by Shion Sono (Suicide Club). It stars Chiaki Kuriyama, the chain-swinging schoolgirl from Kill Bill.

...I have to see this movie.

more like Win a Date with Tad Hamilton... starring Brad Pitt instead of Topher Grace from That 70s Show and the dude from Las Vegas.

The sad thing is, after how great Suicide Club was, I'd probably watch a gay porn directed by Shion Sono.

The joke there is that Sono used to direct gay porn. Har har har. I'm witty.

War of the Worlds was a remake and I wouldn't call Batman Begins a sequel.

War of the Worlds was a remake i forgot to include that, Batman Begins was a sequel disguised as a prequel...we're talking a follow up to a hit movie, not story lines here, so it's 6/3....btw, how was Tommy the 10th biggest money maker of 1975....i mean its ok but top 10?

I would look at The Godfather Part 2 as more of a Lord of the Rings situation. Being that it was made to further the story and more importantly all the hard work and love that was put into the original was put into the 2nd. They hardly make sequels where they put their all into it like they did with the original. Batman Begins is an example of one where they did.

The Godfather Part II was the first sequel in movie history, right? I always thought it was, but I may be wrong. If it was then I think it's hard to compare the number of sequels in 1974 with 2005/06, being that it was a new thing at that time.

Ah, but by the same token:

2005
1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire SEQUEL - and Adaptation of book
2. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith SEQUEL
3. The Chronicles of Narnia: Adaptation of book, and produced for franchise capability
4. War of the Worlds Remake and Adaptation of book
5. King Kong REMAKE
6. Madagascar
7. Mr. & Mrs. Smith
8. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory REMAKE and Adaptation of book
9. Batman Begins - not a sequel, closer to Remake, actually Adaptation of book... and again, for franchise capability
10. Hitch

1975
1. Jaws, Adaptation of book
2. The Towering Inferno Adaptation of book
3. Benji
4. Young Frankenstein Adaptation of book and Remake (albeit indirectly - you certainly wouldn't call it original)
5. The Godfather Part II SEQUEL
6. Shampoo
7. Funny Lady SEQUEL - and also a biopic
8. Murder on the Orient Express Adaptation of book
9. The Return of the Pink Panther SEQUEL
10. Tommy Adaptation of album

SO in that comparison, the number of original films versus the number of adaptations - whether their basis be a book, a previous film or otherwise - seems about the same.

adaption of a book is at least changing the form from print to visual, a remake is just repeating it for whatever reason, and albeit some sequels have a legit purpose and are worthwile, the majority are made to sponge off the audience of the first one....and second and third, it just seems that as a nation (world), we are no longer as adventurous in our entertainment, we kind of like getting the same old reliable thing served up to us....(kind of like restaurants....the mom and pop restaurants have gone by the way side replaced by TGIF, McD, etc etc..) just imo, i am frequently wrong about these things....

Couldn't tell you what the first sequel was but I know it wasn't Godfather Part II. I'll say the Four Musketeers <sp> but I'm sure there were sequels before that.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0006664/maindetails, although some consider it a cash-in rather than a true sequel. In which case, how about The Sheik and The Son of the Sheik?

Hardly. I think it was the first one to use a "II", though.

I think The Testament of Dr. Mabuse could qualify as a sequel (even though it's an adaptation...I'd say it's comparable to Lord of the Rings if you want to make comparisons of the sort).
