Walerian Borowczyk (1923 - 2006)

The controversial Polish filmmaker died last Friday in Paris after being admitted in the hospital because of heart problems. Part Jess Franco/Jean Rollin/Radley Metzger and part Alexandro Jodorowsky/Fernando Arrabal, the euro-cult director was known for his shocking art-house mix of surreal horror, explicit sleaze and porno. He directed 40 feature films including Immoral Tales, The Beast, and Behind Convent Walls.

In memoriam, I'm going to watch The Beast tonight.

"There's implied bestiality, assault and perversion in the priesthood, copious fake ejaculate smeared on bared breasts, masturbation with a rose and, most graphic of all,the eponymous beast toying with it's incredibly big phallus.Still this genuinely erotic film is wonderfully photographed and tasteless."

Blind-bought The Beast last month and was surprised by the multi-dimension of it. It really had me interested to see the rest of his work.

Sure looked like an interesting fellow.

Borowczyk was a great filmmaker. Never truly appreciated in his lifetime.

One of the few directors to truly know how to film an "erotic" feature without being degrading with his camera.

I have requested the ucpoming boxset for a review at TALK and truly hope that they did a good job. It should be a great tribute!!

I've never heard of this guy but he looks interesting. The Beast looks weird as hell. Would you all consider that to be his best movie? Cause I may blind buy it.

Let's just say that he is close to being the Dario Argento of classic European erotic cinema. Yes, The Beast is probably his marquee film.

Now I have to do some research as to who on earth Dario Argento is as well! thanks Pro-B! Looking forward to The Beast.

Well I hate to contradict Pro-B but Borowczyk and Argento don't really have much in common exept for the fact that they both worked with cinematographer Luciano Tovoli on a couple of films. For better comparisons, stick to the ones in my first post.

And I never said they did! But for those with stellar knowledge in Classic Euro-erotica Borowczyk's name means as much as what Dario's name and work mean for fans of Italian horror. It was just an analogy!!
