How the hell does it have legs in it's first weekend?

We'll see how it fares next weekend when it goes against a PG-13 slasher film.

Well someone suggested that since the first one was six years ago that it wouldn't have any appeal to anyone. So the Big Momma franchise itself has some power.

Either that or people like total crap. who knows, who cares, it's Fox.;)

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with legs at all.

Though Bubble barely played anywhere this weekend, how did it to per screen, or is this really a bunch of controversy over something that theater chains basically forced into being direct to video and cable?

Truthfully, I just think that people really just didn't care about it making history this weekend.

then just take it as a sarcastic remark I made. Perhaps you were the one claiming it would bomb because the first was done six years ago. That why you getting a bit uppity about the generic sarcastic remark? ;)

N Bubble Magn. $72,000 - 32 - $2,250 $72,000 $1.60

$2,250 per screen is really bad for a limited opening, but I don't really know how to gauge it.

rmick 01-29-06 10:38 PM

Not being someone who looks at this stuff that often, in comparison to the average per screen for a bunch of the top 10 even, $2,250 doesn't look so bad unless I'm entirely missing something. For something that is coming out on DVD on Tuesday, $2,250 per screen, when it was even only playing one screen here in Chicago seems pretty good, though I'm ready to be proven otherwise.
Someone who knows, does this mean any sell outs this weekend, or even crowded theaters?
Really, I just can't wait to see Bubble on Tuesday!

Really, I just can't wait to see Bubble on Tuesday!

Generally speaking, it depends on the theaters, but no - $2,250 per theater in 32 theaters over the course of 3 days equates to about 225 to 300 people seeing it per theater, or around 75 to 100 people per day (NOT per showing). That's pretty much playing to empty houses. Which is pretty awful for an opening weekend. Now, Bubble is "experimental" in that it's coming out on DVD Tuesday, so I don't really know if it is a failure or if there wasn't any interest in the movie or what. It won't lose money in the long run, but it's a tough call.

Comparison of sold out theater:

Brokeback Mountain opened in 5 theaters, each theater made $38,309 (avg) over the course of 3 days per theater. Comparatively, Bubble opened in 32 theaters, and averaged $2,250 over the course of 3 days per theater.

Brokeback Mountain pulled $547,425 in 3 days while playing in 5 theaters.
Bubble pulled $72,000 in 3 days while playing in 32 theaters.

Unfair comparison considering, but just meant it as an example.
