Re: Gremlins 2
It was a fun movie, but a total departure in tone from the original. If you can accept that, it's great entertainment.
Also, I think in general, people who saw both films as kids have a better appreciation for the sequel than those who saw both films as adults.

Yeah, I don't think I would have liked them nearly as much as an adult. That said, what I liked about G2 is how big of a departure it was from G1. They made their semi-serious movie, now they just wanted to have fun with the concept and they did in grand fashion.

Wow! This thread got a 9.5 year bump to post a Key & Peele skit in it.
But I guess it worked because now I want to see this movie again.

Zero...I adored this game, and even when I could finish it without dying I would still pop it in the NES and play it through. Underrated game based on a movie (and there were precious few games back in the day that would be considered fun to play that were based on a film).

I was 5 when Gremlins came out and it totally blew my mind. I had no idea that it was going to be a scary movie. It was wonderfully disturbing, not just the monster gremlins, but Phoebe Cates' monolouge about her father's Christmas death has to be the darkest moment I'd ever seen in a movie til then. I thought about that for days afterwards.
By the time Gremlins 2 came out I would have been 11. I now watched pretty much whatever R-rated movie I wanted, I was reading adult paperbacks like The Exorcist and Stephen King. I remember feeling completely ripped off by how cartoonish and zany Gremlins 2 was. All these years later, I've still never gone back and given it a second look.

The first film is a nasty, ugly, sadistic piece of work. I never got the love for it, even when I saw it in theaters when I was 13.
The sequel was a hilariously satirical romp. Loved it to death. It died at the box office but I think it was remembered more fondly over time.

I was wondering what Gremlins director Joe Dante was up to these days. I found out he has a website called "Trailers From Hell" that has a YouTube channel full of trailers and filmmakers talking about different movies (such as these):
Brian Trenchard-Smith on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015)

Ti West on THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987)

He also did Burying the Ex, which wasn't very good, but I like to stare at Alexandra Daddario.

Dante really hasn't made a good film since Matinee. And I'd argue that Matinee is probably the best film he's put out.
With that being said, I wonder what he would've done with Small Soldiers and Looney Tunes: Back In Action if the studio allowed him total creative freedom. Small Soldiers plays too much like a hacky Gremlins knock-off in its current state and Looney Tunes is just a mess despite being leagues better than Space Jam.
