Help finding an Anime title

I usually try to refrain from asking this kind of question since i'm always scared of sounding like that idiot in the video store in Clerks.
I just recently rejoined netflix for the 18th time since 98 and there is an anime film i've always wanted to see but never got around to it. It would have came out on dvd(at least R1) the last few years. The cover i believe had a little boy and i think a white dog, and maybe his grandfather standing in the background. I believe it took place right after WWII, and it ranked right up there with Grave of Fireflies with being depressing.
Ok, sorry to come off sounding stupid but any help would be appreciated.

from IMDB:

"To conclude, this is an incredible film for children an adults alike, but also for the serious anime fan. Be warned though-- the US DVD version which floats around is heavily edited and only features an English vocal track, so you might want to try and get hold of an Asian import, which isn't that hard to come by these days, thanks to that wonderful thing called online shopping.

thought you'd want to know this.
