Amazing film. Simply outstanding. I can't wait to see this again; in fact I may have to call into work sick...
On another note, there is no way in hell that James McTeigue directed this thing. No first timer could've pulled off this level of stylization. All praise the comeback of the Wachowski brother and sister.

Plus a lot has to be accredited to the people who brought the sets together, they did an amazing job (and the Wachowskis, I'm sure, had a big hand in that). And for $50m, they certainly milked the budget well.

Just got back from seeing in this and it is one of those very rare movies that I immediately want to see again. I can count on one hand the number of movies in the past ten years that I've liked like this.
I certainly don't want to hype it up, as I went to the movie with 0 expectations aside from being a fan of Alan Moore's work (and never having read V). But if it strikes your interest, go see it.

Simply Awesome..
I had to post about this movie. I usually don't. I have been very depressed lately about the quality of movies in Hollywood. As a matter of fact I can't remember the last time I was actually highly entertained in a theater.
This movie changed that. I was entertained. It was intellectually stimulating, had a wonderful mood and was set in a rich and fantastic world.
I'm sure there was some flaws but I don't care because I was enthralled the entire time. I admit that I most likely watch too, too many movies. I own over 1400 DVDs. I probably have been desensitized to them to some extent but it is nice to finally go to a movie that moved me and entertained me.
I hope people see this because I want Hollywood to make more like it. Thank God someone can make a movie that doesn't insult my intelligence. Who cares about bombs and boobs if they don't care about the characters that have them or are getting blown up by them.

But I suppose they could have taken a step back, but either way, after working on movies such as Dark City and The Matrix movies as an assistant director, you'd better believe McTeigue picked up a thing or two about stylization, and above all else, it had a feel all its own. Flawed in a lot of spots, but again, still good.

Well, I hate to rain on the love parade, but I thought the movie was just OK (and certainly was directed by McTeague...although, it sounds like the Bros. were responsible for some of the BEST scenes in the flick). It has a lot going for it: excellent performances all around, great cinematography and it does bring up a lot of political ideas. It also has a lot that I didn't think really worked well: Far too many political ideas for one story, tangents that shoot off from the main narrative with no payoff, and for a movie that is almost SOLELY being marketed for it's action, a SEVERE lack of action.
All the action sequences added up probably make about 20min of screen time in 2 hours... that isn't nearly enough IMO. Had they not marketed it this way, I wouldn't have a problem, but they ARE. So I was expecting a thinking man's action flick... instead I got a smart DRAMA with a bit of action. I think the Wachowski brothers, while being talented, are really falling into a pattern here. V for Vendetta is a pastiche of ideas from other sources: politics/history/literature/film, all rolled up into one big Bloated movie, where it's definitely QUANTITY of ideas, rather than Quality. The Matrix films suffered the same fate (substitute politics in the above for philosophy and you have the matrix).
It brings up LOTS of questions though, and that is a good thing...but I worry about 14 year olds seeing this and just thinking "Ah, cool!" rather than realizing the ramifications of everything going on... I don't think it's portraying Terrorism in a particularly negative light either...it's not overly glorifying it, but I heard a few kids walking out talking about how awesome V was: "It was sweet how he killed those guys. Sometimes people just deserve to die...we should blow up the government!" This kind of talk REALLY worries me....
That said, it had some good things going for it, but overall, I was expecting a LOT more.

I saw this tonight and was amazed. I absolutely loved this film. I had never read the book but will be soon enough.
Hugo Weaving was excellent as V and Portman did an outstanding job. Even Stephen Rea was great.
I cannot wait to see it again. Gonna try and hit it early next week. Definite buy for me.

Thought it was pretty good. Visually I found it flat and dull so that was pretty dissapointing.
Didn't agree with everything in the film but I usually don't anyways... a solid flick though.

Totally badass film. Alan Moore's work never translates well people say, but I liked this and From Hell, LXG was weak. I'm defiantely reading V in comic form now.
I still think this was a thinking man's action pic, despite some thinking it wasn't enough in the action dept. Hugo was more of a badass here than in all 3 Matrix's! Um, the second half I think was abit slow, but I was totally enthralled.
Highly Recommended! (I hope people see this, I'm sick of all these dumb action films getting bank)
Grade: B+

It's nice to see so many positive reviews. I've heard nothing but good things about this movie. I would of gone to see it last night but I had work and didn't get out until late. I'll let you know what I think when I see it Sunday.

Quite enjoyable, it didn't change as much of Moore's work as I thought (I actually liked the ending changes a lot), they did "soften up" V a fair amount which wasn't needed but otherwise a solid B+ or A- depending on my mood. And Hugo Weaving was fantastic considering you never see him.

I saw this movie twice, Thursday night and Friday night and loved it. This morning I saw the V for Vendetta show on MTV, and was disgusted. Almost 90% of the time they are talking about or showing clips of modern day war, modern terrorism, and present day Bush speeches or government operations and the people think it's a quite direct reflection of present day America?
Is it just me or are these people insane? (for anyone who's seen the special)
To me, I mostly saw Nazi Germany with medical experiments/torture, arrest of gays, powerful Nazi symbolism (red and black symbols), powerful speaking chancellor, etc. Also a little 1984 with 'all knowing government'.
As far as I can tell, the courts in US have been more liberal as far as gay rights. For a direct look, see San Fransisco.
Anyway, I was disgusted with the special as they spent most the time talking about present day United States and terrorism and took about 5 seconds to say it could be reflective of other past/present societies and played a 2 second clip of Hitler and Mao.
I don't know if a single one of them knew who Alan Moore was or that he wrote 25 years ago..
Anyone else see this?

Yeah, I saw that. All the Nazi references were quite clear. But I thought as though they weren't directly pointing at USA, but more as a subtextual warning. And a poinant one at that.

As a side note, I know he disowned the movie and all, but I still consider it a real disgrace that Alan Moore's name is nowhere in the credits for this. I know it's his wishes, but still, it seems wrong that the movie, 90% of which is from his ideas, doesn't have his name on it....

Great film. And when the 'directed by James McTeigue' credit popped up, I was like, no f'n way. This movie had the Wachowski siblings signature all over it. Did they give up the credit to avoid the mandatory publicity interviews? And I was also wondering why Alan Moore's name didn't pop up. The only thing I saw significantly different from the book was a slight change in the ending. And it could be argued that it was a better ending than the book. The tone was a lot closer to the book than I expected it to be.
