Deathrace 2000...no wait...3000. Coming soon.

Looks like a new Deathrace movie is in production, Deathrace 3000, directed by...Paul W.S. Anderson. Yikes.

Deathrace 3000 at IMDB

Geofferson 12-28-05 12:56 PM

I remember Anderson wanting to make this for release back in 2000, although it was still called Death Race 2000. Glad to see he's still intent on ruining existing properties.

Buckle up: Allen joins Uni's 'Race'
By Borys Kit

Aug 8, 2007

Joan Allen, hot off of Universal Pictures' "The Bourne Ultimatum," is returning to the studio for "Death Race," Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of the Roger Corman cult classic. Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson also are buckling up for the action thriller, which Jason Statham is toplining.

"Death Race" sees a future America in which prison inmates are forced to brutally compete in an enclosed arena. Statham will play a prisoner who, with only weeks to go before his release, is coerced into being a driver and becomes the crowd favorite called Frankenstein.

Allen will play the warden of the prison who runs the race and ruthlessly forces Statham to enter the arena. McShane will play a coach, while Gibson is a sociopathic racer named Machine Gun Joe who seeks to escape from prison.

Production will start this year with an aim for a fall 2008 release.

Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner are producing via their C/W Prods. as well as Anderson and his Impact Pictures partner Jeremy Bolt.

Scott Bernstein is overseeing for Universal.

Allen, repped by ICM and attorney Frank Stewart, reprised her role as Pamela Landy for "Ultimatum," which broke boxoffice records when it opened to $69.3 million last weekend. She regularly receives acclaim for being a dramatic anchor in productions and starred in the acclaimed drama "The Upside of Anger."

McShane, repped by ICM, is best known for his work on HBO's "Deadwood" and next appears in "The Golden Compass."

Gibson, who most recently appeared in "Transformers," is repped by WMA, Jerome Martin and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Seantn 06-14-08 02:41 PM

Wow! Anderson didn't even sync up the dialogue with their lips!!!

Zen Peckinpah 06-14-08 03:01 PM

Unlike that shit excuse for a Punisher movie, THIS is what I call a stupid action movie. Paul Not Thomas Anderson notwithstanding, this has all the ingredients of glorious idiocy:

Jason Statham? Check.

Apocalyptic-looking cars? Check.

Busloads of hot chicks? Check.

Gratuitous use of "Welcome to the Jungle" in the trailer? CHECK.

If it's half as good as Crank or Shoot 'Em Up, I'm good to go.

Seantn 06-14-08 03:23 PM

Agreed. I actually think it looks fun.

valkyrie 06-14-08 03:35 PM

I really hate going to the theater, but I have to say, this looks like a LOT of fun. It's like Transporter meets Mad Max. Count me in.

That's funny because that's the first thing that popped in my head watching the trailer. I thought the first Death Race was so bad I could barely get through it but this one looks watchable.

Sessa17 06-14-08 06:13 PM

Looks ridicawesome! I utterly can't wait for this. I am an unashamed huge fan of Statham, playing, well, himself yet again, plus Al F'n Swearengen. I'm sold.

Of coarse, I also really liked Doomsday earlier this year, so I'm clearly the target audience for this movie.

mndtrp 06-14-08 09:31 PM

Makes me want to see a movie based on the Twisted Metal video game.

toddly6666 06-15-08 09:52 PM

I think Anderson is a closet-G.I. Joe fan. He may have to direct the G.I. Joe sequel: G.I. Joe versus Zartan's Dreadnocks

http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/86/thu...hine_title.jpg

this was my favorite G.I. Joe toy vehicle - Thrasher with Thunder Machine - I'm assuming it was Anderson's as well. ;)

islandclaws 06-16-08 11:39 AM

Ugh. That trailer did nothing but remind me why Paul W.S. Anderson is a half-assed director. Other than Event Horizon the guy hasn't made a single completely rewatchable film. Everything he makes has incredible potential to be awesome, and he always fails to deliver on it.

bhk 06-16-08 02:37 PM

Looks good in a road-warrior sort of way.

What is there not to love about the original? It is just the right amount of camp, violence, social commentary, and gratuitous nudity all rolled into one! :D

obviously LSFW...

I am all over this.

Caught news on this during "First Look" infront of Dark Knight. Looks fun!

Actually you beat me with the Twisted Metal thing...

After seeing the First Look & Movie trailer.. and directed by Paul Anderson (behind videogame movies like MK & RE)

It made me think.. is this some sort of a non-licensed Twisted Metal movie? The cars, trucks and weapons... Geez they almost exactly match Twisted Metal Cars & Trucks.

The Deathrace title is way off...

Wolf359 07-22-08 10:36 PM

I may still see this, but I don't think I've ever seen a trailer before that literally gave away the ENTIRE movie.

Ginwen 07-23-08 12:08 AM

I may still see it but I don't see how it's Deathrace with no points for running over pedestrians.

Zen Peckinpah 08-18-08 10:11 PM

Razzie contender for 2008?

I'm praying to god this movie ends up being an ungodly, remorseless ton of stupid (and so-bad-it's-good), this only sweetens the deal. Then again, I was seriously bored off my ass by the last Alien vs. Predator movie, but still, this looks like the type of movie that Beavis and Butt-head would watch. Can it eclipse Doomsday for the award in being the guiltiest pleasure of the year? We'll find out Friday.

Brack 08-18-08 10:22 PM

I don't know if it'll be any good, but hats off to them for casting Joan Allen.

I remember seeing this on TV when I was a little kid and being confused by the inadvertent surreality caused by the low budget: "But...those people in the crowd are painted on..."

islandclaws 08-20-08 02:11 PM

From Bloody-Disgusting:

It looks as if Universal Pictures remake of Death Race could be crashing before it even hits the wall. Writer Adam Stone is in a race to stop the release of Universal's film, which is slated to hit theaters everywhere this Friday. The reason? Plagiarism. Read on for the story and watch for news as it develops.

Stone claims in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles federal court that the upcoming Universal thriller is based on a script he pitched to the film's producer-director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt. He seeks a court order stopping the film's release.

Stone claims that after the producers passed, Bolt made and kept a copy of his screenplay, titled "Joust," to use as a "blueprint" for Anderson's revision of the script for "Death Race."

While "Death Race" is purported to be a remake of the 1975 film, "Death Race 2000," Stone contends in his lawsuit that it actually is based on "Joust" and that there are at least 39 elements in the soon-to-be released film that mirror his screenplay.

Universal, which is a defendant in the lawsuit, declined comment on the lawsuit.

"Death Race," which stars Jason Statham and Joan Allen, is set for release FridayAug. 22. Stone is asking the court to stop the release of the film.

"Experience in other cases has shown that unless such orders are issued, defendants will simply continue to exploit the infringing motion picture in all media and by all methods at their disposal," the lawsuit states.

Stone seeks unspecified damages.

******************************************************************

Highly doubtful this guy will get them to block the release of the movie. I hope at the least he gets a fat payout from Uni for stealing his script, not that it's very original to begin with. I think there are at least a couple dozen films with the exact same premise, but still...

Jason Statham, fast cars and Hot Prison Chicks, I am so there. I will probably attempt to watch this on Saturday.

Daytripper 08-22-08 01:50 PM

Just got back from seeing it and I had a blast. The movie is exactly what it's advertised to be. Racing, over the top acting/dialogue, and action. I'm stunned Ebert gave this a 0.5 star review and the likes of "Speed 2" and "The Mummy 3" both three stars each. That's just ridiculous. If you liked "The Road Warrior", you'll like this. At least I hope you do. Both are cut from the same clothe IMO.

I'm an Ebert fan, but I must say, his review is surprisingly lazy. I don't get a sense for the movie other than "it's like a video game." This from a guy who doesn't even get video games.

Paul W.S. Anderson is one of my most hated directors of all time, but I actually had fun with this one. It's nothing special but I got what I went for, cars shooting the shit out of each other and explosions. Not going to win any awards but it was entertaining as hell...however the movie sort of peaked for me during the second race - everything after that is just alright and the ending leaves a lot to be desired - the final voiceover is terrible as is the horrendous scene with Joan Allen trying to get Statham to stay...those things were classic W.S. IMO... but I enjoyed most of it a lot more than I thought I would, so I'll give it 3/5 stars.

Not to mention Stathan's female "co-driver" is Megan Fox league smokin' hot!

But I agree mdc, this is not out to win any awards or year end 10 best lists. It's goofy fun like "The Fast and the Furious" and "Gone in 60 Seconds".
