Redemption The Stan Tookie Williams Story
I watched Redemption The Stan Tookie Williams Story starring Jamie Foxx last night out of curiosity and while I thought I'd seen some slurpy biopics, this one took the cake. I kept thinking of What's Truth Got To Do With It?, the Ike Turner biopic featured on The Critic.

Yeah, I don't think even-handedness was part of the mission statement. They were so concerned about accuracy that they messed up Albert Owens' name and called him "Alvin". I guess that's why it's called Redemption and not Murderer.

Not surprising since the film was co-produced by Barbara Becnel (portrayed by Lynn Whitfield in the film), the woman/journalist who the film depicts as being (partly) responsible for Tookie's "redemption". No wonder the murders were only mentionned in passing. Knowing the bias, I thought the film was alright and certainly showed that Foxx could be a serious actor (this was before his breakthru role in Collateral).

Fuck "Tookie". He got what he deserved, though it should've happened right after the deaths of the innocent people he killed in 1979 (and I'm a registered Democrat). Appeals suck.

By the way, Tookie was the co-founder of the Crips. A gang that has murdered hundreds maybe thousands since it's charter. To join the gang, you have to perform a violent crime in front of onlooking gang members. If you are a female, you have the option of the viloent crime or having sex with several senior gang members. And finally, the Crips were the first to import crack cocaine into the U.S. Thanks alot Tookie.

Me too. How anyone could do that and then laugh and make fun about them about it hours later...
Those pictures were brutal, Jamers. I regret looking at them!

There's a thread about Tookie Williams in the Politics Forum if you want to discuss anything about his situation other than the film. These comments are off topic here though.

I haven't seen it, but I want to to see Foxx's performance.
Is it safe to assume that the "facts" presented are as ridiculous as The Hurricane?

I was reading somewhere that Austrians were protesting Schwarzenegger for not giving Tookie a pardon or stay of execution or something. They also want to remove Arnold's name from a stadium or some such structure in Austria and rename it after Tookie Williams. WTF! Hey, you can be against the death penalty all you want but naming a stadium after a convicted killer!?!? That settles it, Austrians must be crazy.
