Anyone calling himself a "Lego artist" seriously needs to get laid.

eXcentris 11-28-05 10:37 PM

On the other hand anyone calling himself a "Lego artist" has probably built fully functional female genitals out of Lego already.

DeputyDave 11-29-05 01:15 AM

I'm betting he used a computer program to place each piece. Something similar to those programs that create pictures out of thousands of little pictures.

Yup. He mentions "computer aided design" in the question and answer section.

mmconhea 11-29-05 09:50 AM

To make this would be easy.
Create an index color version of the image. hand pick the colors based on the primary colors of legos. Print an enlarged version, but turn off interpolation when you resize. so each pixel ends up being a square the size of a lego piece.
apply color legos to same color on paper.
I'm going to try it... Where do you buy 1x1 pieces?

I haven't checked this site, but I've heard http://shop.lego.com and www.bricklink.com mentioned somewhere.

I see where you're going with this, and it makes sense, but how would you make an "index color version" of the image? (what software, etc).

And I'm not as impressed now (because it's computer-aided) but it would still take quite a bit of time and patience to hand-place more than 4,500 Lego pieces in the correct order.

DonnachaOne 11-29-05 09:18 PM

That's such a great idea. A bucket of bricks and voila!

I could make a series of these...

Actually, I just took a look at that professional Lego builder's site above, and apparently even he uses software when he creates mosaics (I was under the impression that the Pro's did it freehand)

It sounds a bit more complicated than I thought. Here's a link from his site:

I'd like to know what "proprietary software" the Lego pro's use. If anyone knows, please post the info.

Lateralus 12-01-05 03:39 AM

60,000+ hits, that is too funny.

mmconhea 12-01-05 09:27 AM

I have some process worked out to get a template for the legos... it's not perfect with the colors yet... I have to work out the dithering...
but the sizing is good. I can't see any image coming out well unless it is a very large image... this one is Jessica Alba at 20"x30"

http://www.advancedlanguage.com/temp.../lego-alba.gif
You can see it has little detail...
I uploaded miniturized version (not a scaled print version) so you can see how it looks from a distance.

Essentially printing it out at that size yeilds each pixel as a single block of lego. Only the basic lego colors are used (black, white, blue, yellow and green), but there are other lego colors to result in more detail (two shades of grey, orange and brown).

If anyone wants and image converted just let me know...

Ripcord 12-01-05 12:08 PM

This is stupid. Who cares if its made out of Lego's. 200 dollars is not worth it. I'll never understand why people waste money on stupid crap like this.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, no?
"Stupid" to you, but not to everyone (at least not the high bidder)

animalmystic 12-02-05 01:17 AM

Hey mmconhea, I would love to get some more info from you about this, or even get a couple images converted, drop me an email

animalmystic(at)hotmail(dot)com

PopcornTreeCt 12-02-05 01:30 PM

$200 is quite ridiculous for something that can be made with not too much difficulty.

Let's say it took this ebay seller only 10 seconds to choose and apply each of the more than 4,500 Lego blocks (maybe it took more or less time-- who knows, but he's not just sticking these things on without carefully determing where the need to go). That's about 12 and half hours worth of work, so for $200, he's making $16 an hour on this (and that's not including whatever the Lego blocks cost him, or the time it took to design it).

It really doesn't sound that unreasonable to me.

Dave7393 12-02-05 04:39 PM

If you guys thought $200 was a ripoff, you'll love this--- the price has almost doubled. :)

This one would be 32 inches wide.

Jason 12-05-05 05:30 PM

Neat. I like how his other auction is a bootleg DVD.
