A new line of thinking, incorporating HP with sharks in order to get the Jaws franchise restarted.

With the kind of reviews I've read for this one I think it will clean up this weekend and next- I'd be suprised if the saturday numbers aren't stronger than Fridays' numbers.

Exactly, my little grasshopper. Exactly.

Of course, I may be wrong about Rowling. I can't say for sure.
Blast...there go my dreams of seeing Jon Stewart in a softcore Harry Potter sequel alongside Clarissa (and maybe that talking cat...and that one fat broad that played the aunt, you know the one I'm talking about). However, my friend, if you don't think there will be at least thirteen Lord of the Rings sequels, the joke is on you.

I'll definitely be checking out the new Harry Potter in a few weeks. I've only seen the first one, but I own all 3 on dvd. By the time I get to those, the crowds should be fairly small for the new film. Very impressive opening. Though I'm surprised it dropped almost 10% on Saturday.

Sweet # for Harry. Besides Kong there will be much less competition for GOF than Azkaban had last year with it's summer release. Almost every other movie in the top 10 dropped 50-60%+ from last week.

Sounds like Warner Bros damage control to me, trying to cover up the fact that Harry Potter is tanking big time.

Fri's numbers include the Thurs midnight showings. It's expected that Sat would drop some. The last HP dropped 18% on it's Sat.

I called it surprising because movies with similarly huge fan bases, Episode III, Spider-man 2, and Return of the King, didn't drop on their first Saturday. I know it will make a ton of money, but I thought this one would have had a Saturday increase.

Yup. I thought that this was the case as well. Crazy bitches, trying to save their ass from the shame of only $101m.

It's possible that since school is out this week, families held off since there was no urgency to see it this weekend.

Otherwise, I got nuttin'

None of those movies was a Friday opener. Opening day on these types of flicks is almost always going to be inflated due to first day rush, whether it falls on Wednesday, Thursday, etc. You have to compare opening day to the first Saturday, not the first Friday to the first Saturday.

Spider-man 2 - 1st day (Wed) = $40.4 mil, 1st Saturday = $33.7 mil
LotR: Return of the King - 1st day (Wed) = $34.5 mil, 1st Saturday = $27.5 mil
SW Episode III - 1st day (Thu) = $50.0 mil, 1st Saturday = $40.7 mil

Only $101 million? Time pull the plug on the franchise boys!

Nice to see it did well. I think that this will do well again next weekend with Thanksgiving and being the thing families want to go see. I also see Walk the Line maintaining with the older audience, as my showing was chock full of people over forty and fifty.

Definitely a good haul for GoF considering its length.

Yeah, and Harry Potter opened on a Thursday and didn't have a Saturday increase...just like the other comparable movies listed. What're you trying to get at?

And they already proved why that theory has a flaw in since they opened up on a wednesday.

It looks like HP's actual figure increased a mil to $102,335,066. Studios usually overestimate the weekend so it's nice push-up.

Technically that's correct (I guess Fri 12AM showings would be even more so), but my statement still stands.
