Re: Ghostbusters III (2015) S: Jonah Hill

Paul Feig is being courted to direct and produce a “Ghostbusters” comedy reboot.

Feig is not helming “Ghostbusters 3″ or another sequel, in any sense of the word, as has been incorrectly reported.

The movie is a total reboot most likely with female characters played by comedic actresses in the ghostbusting roles, according to sources. The script will be written from scratch.

Feig, who is best known for helming the comedy hits “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat,” has been in conversation with Sony to direct the project. However, no formal negotiations have taken place yet. Sony declined to comment.

Feig is also re-teaming with Melissa McCarthy to direct her latest comedy “Spy,” which is slated for a Memorial Day 2015 release. The director has several new scripts in development at Fox that will likely be ready to go while he’s at work on “Spy” so this “Ghostbusters” fem reboot will not necessarily be his next film.

“Ghostbusters 3″ was initially supposed to be directed by Ivan Reitman, the director of the original “Ghostbusters” and its 1989 follow-up, “Ghostbusters II,” but he dropped out in March. It’s unclear whether another director will be chosen for that project or if this reboot will take its place.

“Men in Black 3″ writer Etan Cohen was brought on broad in 2012 to redraft “Ghostbusters 3.” “The Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired in 2008 to revive the blockbuster franchise.

Melissa McCarthy as Pieta Venkman
Sandra Bullock as Erika Spangler
Retta as Wynnona Zedmore

And Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz because HE WON'T LET IT FUCKIN' DIE.

Yeah, that won't happen.

Sony is in bed with Seth Rogen and James Franco. Why not just hand it off to them at this point?

I don't want this film to be made unless Melissa McCarthy is cast as either Slimer or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Chick ghostbusters is about as far away from what I want to see in a movie as anything could possibly be.

FUCK THIS.

Can't Aykroyd shut it down? Who ultimately owns the franchise at this point?

Sony, Bill Murray, Aykroyd, the Estate of Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman all have final veto power over anything. The complicated divided ownership is part of the reason this wasn't made when development rumors started in the mid-90s.

Sony can go ahead with whatever they want, but if the other 4 3 parties don't come to terms then nothing will happen.

This is all part of the reason Murray doesn't have to be in this to collect a big fat paycheck. He gets residuals either way.

Edit: Apparently, Murray relinquished his ownership when he said no to the Lee/Eisenberg script from a few years ago.

There's still 4 principal owners, which makes anything actually happening unlikely.

We all have to sign off on it unanimously — uh, I’m not sure Billy does anymore, since he abrogated his rights by sort of, by saying, two years ago he said, “I don’t want to be involved,” and the picture company I think had some clause in there that if he actually passed on the third of fourth offer, he no longer has a view of the franchise. So, that’s for the lawyers to decide. Of course, I’d love to have Billy call me tomorrow and say, “Let’s go to work and start writing.”

As ridiculous as it got over all the prolonged years in developmental hell. I still would have camped out for a first night showing to see the original cast come back. No matter HOW old they were. I would have eaten it up with a spoon.

However, when Harold Ramis died, so did Ghostbusters 3 for me. He's a one of a kind, utterly irreplaceable guy. Even if Bill Murray signed on I'd have a hard time backing it.

Paul Feig directing an all female Ghostbusters is so unbelievably far from anything I would ever want to see that it's almost a comedy on its own.

I probably wouldn't watch it for free.

I know some people would disagree, but I'd really like to see that. Get Aykroyd and Murray to cameo as owners of Ghostbusters, Inc., and pass it on to a new generation as franchisees. The film could even start out with a dedication ceremony for Egon, or something like that. Oh, and uh, Winston could be in it too.

That's been the plan in every incarnation of the script, dating back to the Ghostbusters: Hellbent spec from 1999. It's the only feasible way for this to do business, because aside from the internet, the general movie going public isn't going to flock to a film starring Aykroyd & Ernie Hudson (and Sony wouldn't be stupid enough to release a film with them starring on their own, given how long this film has been languishing in development hell).

Sounds too gimmicky to do an all female crew of Ghostbusters, and if Melissa McCarthy or Rebel Wilson end up in this i'm definitely out. I wouldn't mind women mixed in with men directly in the new generation of Ghostbusters idea though.

Christ, they haven't renamed the reboot to Foodbusters.

With Ramis gone, my interest level has gone way down.

Did I read somewhere that the aliens comedy that David Duchovny did several years ago was supposed to be Ghostbusters 3, or was that just someone on this forum speculating?

Ghostbusters had plot,
Ghostbusters II had plot,
Why new Ghostbusters with woman and new plot, why they say it like that?

Speculation. Evolution was a spiritual sequel, but the Ghostbusters 3 script floating around at that time was the Ghostbusters in Hell premise.

Reitman put a lot of touches in it to pay homage, along with the Aykroyd cameo, but nothing beyond that.

Easy. As someone who recently watched Ghostbusters II on Netflix in SuperHD, it's not a good film and just one of the reasons on why I would not be upset if we never saw a third.

While being a carbon copy of the original I still maintain it was the funnier and scarier of the 2.
