In Jackson's version, Kong literally slipped away from her.

Well, upon second viewing, I would say that my opinion of King King is now a bit lower than when I saw it in the theater.
The first time I saw it in the theater I enjoyed it for the most part. I felt that it was a bit too long and that there could have been a few minutes cut here and there to tighten it up (canyon chase and insect scenes dragged for me, along with the part of the T-Rex/Kong fight among the vines).
Now that I've watched it again at home, boy, I am really underwhelmed by the special effects (aside from the excellent looking Kong). Some are just laughable (the blending of actors among the dino stampede, and the way the raptor looking dinos looked pasted in).
Although still enjoyable overall, I utilized my scan button here and there. I really liked the start and ending of the movie (once they hit New York) but felt the island portion just dragged a bit too much.

Excellent movie, there's not much else to say. I'm still amazed that I've watched this flick twice now in two days and it's 3 hours long. Jackson is an excellent director and this film was an amazing accomplishment.
Best movie of 2005 and It is now part of my small DVD collection.

I didn't like Carl Denham in this movie. Its not the fault of actor Jack Black, but it was the way he was written in the script. In the original Merian C Cooper 1933 version, Denham was a reckless adventurer, very brave, very level-headed. He had an agenda, sure, but he also cared about people.
But the Carl Denham in the 2005 script was a self-centered ego-maniac who could give two shits about people, was not brave at all, and was also kind of moronic.
I think the movie suffered a bit because of this. Still a great movie due to an impressive King Kong, but I think the human characters left something to be desired. I didn't dig the changing around of characters backgrounds either. Driscoll a playwright, c'mon. Was that really necessary?

King Kong - amazing movie!
Why did this movie get bashed so badly? I thought it was great! And very sad and touching too, I shed a few tears when Kong died and Naiomi was in the boat crying as he stuck his palm out to reach out for her

it didn't really get bashed at all and was in fact on many critics top lists. many compared it to the LotR trilogy and thought it wasn't as rich. but, it was an entirely different movie. it did very well (though again, not the #'s that LotR did which is why you heard some criticism) and was in fact very well recieved.

I don't think it really got bashed. Sure, flaws were pointed out like some superfluous sub-plots and it's overall excess. The original was a very tight and exciting movie and it will naturally be compared to that. Also keep in mind that this is now the third time this story has been told on the big screen and it's been basically the same in all three.

I felt once they actually arrived at the island, the movie really picked up and was really enjoyable, but its just took so god damn long to get there.

I enjoyed it, other than Jack Black. He made the movie drag everytime he was onscreen, and it bothered me that his eyebrows had more action than Kong.

I really enjoyed this movie in the theatre, but I haven't been able to sit through it on dvd. I don't know if it is because I have already seen it, or if it just a movie that needs to bee seen large, but it seems almost painfully slow now.
