Hasn't anyone noticed that the guy isn't very good looking? Tough to buy him as Bond (known for his killer looks and charm) if he's not very attractive. He's not ugly persay, but he's far from what I think the public will envision as a Bond, especially considering some of the other choices out there. He was great in Layer Cake, but I think this is a mistake.

This being the most recent, I see that a number of my fellow DVDTalkers have expressed doubt if Daniel Craig has the looks to pull things off in the role of Bond. Now this is about as far as you can get from being a scientific poll, but, based on feedback from women I know who've seen him in "Layer Cake", the consensus seems to be that Daniel Craig is hardly lacking when it comes to sex appeal. He might not be a pretty boy or entirely classically handsome but sex appeal he's got - they sure seem to like him quite a bit. And is there really that great a gulf between Craig's looks and the younger version of Sean Connery, to me they seem at least in the same ballpark. Plus, based solely on looks, this franchise trotted out a past-his-prime Roger Moore at least a couple of times right.

But, yes, as others have commented none of it matters (at least to me) if they continue to make the same types of films as the last couple of Bond entries.

While I still feel there are others more fitting for the role of Bond, I'll allow that Messr. Craig has the chops for it. The real test will be if the writer and director can produce a film that makes up for the last couple of crapfests.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has just announced via Reuters that the official announcement as to who will play James Bond in Casino Royale will be made at a news conference in London this Friday, October 14.

http://commanderbond.net/Public/Stories/2960-1.shtml

quote
Media reports continue to swirl that Daniel Craig will be the man named the new 007, but no official source has yet confirmed. Variety.com reported yesterday that Craig's agents ICM in London couldn't comment until Eon made an announcement, but that they expected that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson would "let the cat out of the bag by the end of the week."

So after all the rumours, it's gonna be OVER LOL, I'm worried.

Who else is worried? Craig fans here? I wanted Brosnan to do a 5th, tarantino must of scared the producers off it.

Look at the picture halfway down the page with dark hair. Seems like a Bond to me.

Come on! That's the best thing about being a guy. Cool, confident and a good rap are worth 1000 times more than looks.

Two comments about Daniel Craig's looks:

1) He is much hotter than most of his google-pics make him seem. Ask nearly any woman or gay man who's seen Layer Cake if the star is a hottie. Definately in the same league with Stratham and Owen, although he does have a shortage of glamour-shots on the web. Most are either candids or character/heavy shots.

2) Here's Stephen Fry joking about Craig: "...a British actor so good looking that his face has been declared a place of outstanding natural beauty, which makes it an ideal place to sit and enjoy a picnic."

I keep hoping they are toying with us and when the announce the "new" Bond tomorrow, Pierce will come strolling out on stage.

How ANYONE thinks this is a good move is beyond me. Especially when the franchise is making more than it ever has with Pierce.

Somewhere in the world Jeremy Northam is sitting in a corner crying, dialing a number and firing his agent.

I adore the Bond series and I hope for the best with Craig although I feel badly about it...

Why, oh, why did they dump Brosnan? He was such a fantastic Bond!

-sigh-

What gets me the most about the word coming out of the "Bond Camp" is that they keep saying how Craig is closest to the way Ian Fleming described Bond in the books.

Sorry guys, you used the SAME press when you named Dalton as Bond, and as much as I liked Timothy (at least he LOOKED like Bond), that didn't go particularly well, did it?

I think I finally figured out why they really named Craig over Brossan, Jackman, McGregor and Owen - because he's the CHEAPEST of the bunch...meaning they can sign him for a multi-picture deal at a relatively low price. Well, you get what you pay for...

The irony here is that, as a fan of great acting, I'll probably LIKE Craig as Bond (I was a big fan of Dalton, who may be the best actor of those who played Bond), but from a profit point of view, it's a HUGE mistake by the studio...Craig isn't a marque star and never will be. Might be another "two and out" Bond in the series.

One and done, maybe...

EON and Sony will have one hell of a hard time selling the general public on Craig as Bond. He just doesn't look like what the public expects Bond to look like.

Great actor, beautiful British accent, and quite handsome (especially those piercing blue eyes...the still pics don't do him justice). I don't know about other females, but I'm sold on Daniel Craig as Bond. I haven't seen many of his films, but I thought he was very sexy in both Tomb Raider and Layer Cake. One minor quibble: the funny looking ears But who cares. The fact that he's blond doesn't matter at all to me. In fact I'm glad they didn't just go with a young Brosnan clone. If they had done that it would've been dumb, because I didn't think Pierce was too old to do one more film. I still don't see any real validity to his being dumped (it was the script to the last film that stunk, not him), but whatever.

Anyway I'm happy with the choice so far and just hoping the script doesn't blow. I had been hoping for Clive Owen, but I'm glad in a way they went with a relative unknown. I wouldn't want someone like Clive to get stuck in a role like Bond and not have much time to do more diverse projects. Look at how many amazing, challenging films Brosnan got to do between Bond films. Eh...not many. I wonder who the Bond girls will be. Any choices guys?

Me too. Expecting Pierce with a smaller announcement that Craig will be a villian, maybe another double-O agent ala Goldeneye. I'm surprised Martin Campbell has no pull. He re-invigorated the franchise with Brosnan and could make a killer statement for Brosnan's last flick. Bookend his time as Bond if you will.

Also agree on the last part, the films may have not been the greatests but Pierce has turned the Bond franchise into quite the cash cow. Not to sleight the films before him, but Brosnan's Bond films have made monumental amounts of money. It would be insane to turn that away to risk it on a nobody who doesn't even look the part.

I would totally be sold on Craig as the villain (LeChiffre) - that would be great casting! But as Bond?

Too bad Sean Bean is too old for a first crack at Bond - he'd fit the "grittier" style that they say that they want to follow for Casino Royale. Of course, playing a Bond villain that would pretty much rule him out anyway. Too bad - he might have been better than Brosnan.

But Craig? I don't get what they're thinking. It certainly won't help CR at the box office - more likely it will hurt quite a bit.

If true...

... "good luck, Commander".

The more I look at it, the more sene it seems to make to me. It could be that EON is depending on a gamble. Steven Spielberg's Munich stars Craig and comes out right in the midle of awards season. Perhaps the Bond producers are hoping to sign a guy on the fast track for critical acclaim? Someone about to have a breakout performance, or even a possible award nominee?"Casino Royale... starring Academy Award Nominee Daniel Craig..."

It's a stretch, but who can tell?

Not sure why but the pic above reminds me of young Bobcat Goldthwait. He looks kinda scrawny.

The announcement came down a little while ago - it is Craig.

Now the betting will center on how many of the 3 contracted Bond movies he actually makes.

If Casino Royale underperforms at the box office like many (including me) are now suggesting it will (due to Craig's lack of appeal), it will be interesting to see if he is given another chance, or if the part will then be given to someone with greater box office appeal, like Hugh Jackman (as an example).

I have all faith in Craig. I've liked him in other movies and I'll like him as Bond.
