Other than Zatoichi I've never been able to enjoy any of his films. Am I missing something?

I don't think so, I just found it extremely pretensious and plodding.

Well, I meant his films in general. Even the really highly acclaimed ones leave me cold.

Tsui Hark's Seven Swords was cool...a bit long, but cool. I'll second the Yokai war, as that was quite fun, and A World Without Theives was good, despite the shitty subs on the version I saw (it was Engrish to the max...). And of course there was Kung-Fu Hustle.

I've been dying to get my hands on a copy of Fearless with subs...

The DVD I got has a great DTS-ES mix, didn't remember having a prob with the English subs

I enjoyed Fearless. The story wasn't half bad (if a little predictable) and it had terrific fight choreography by Woo Ping. I thought this was better than Tom Yum Goong, which had a plot that just didn't make much sense (although the fight scenes were great).

The best new Asian films I've seen in the past year are A Bittersweet Life (a stylish gangster movie from the director of A Tale of Two Sisters), Survive Style 5+ (a colorful, offbeat comedy), and Mind Game (an anime movie, but it's not typical anime fare).

Well that last line just described Fireworks and Sonatine perfectly :)

I get what you mean though. I haven't seen Dolls, but I've heard mixed reviews. I'm interested in finding out more about Takeshis'. That movie seems completely insane, but AFAIK there's no English translation and very little data about the film is out there.

It looks like there are at least four different versions out with English subs:

R1 or R3?

RichC2 04-11-06 07:54 PM

R3 I'm afraid, but it has English subtitles:

There's an R2-J (NTSC) DVD with English Subs available. Just came out around April 7th.

3 Extremes gets my vote - Takashi Miike showing a different side alone is worth the watch but all three stories were excellent..........even though "Dumplings" was beyond weird.

If you like DOLLS, you should also check our MARRONNIER, a highly acclaimed Japanese horror flick also about dolls.

If you haven't seen it yet, then I highly recommend Il Mare (Siworae). It's not as great as MSG, which is in my top ten or so of all time, but it's up there pretty high.

thanks for the recommendation. i saw it today. it was a great drama and the semi time travel thing had me very interested (i'm a HUGE time travel fan) but the paradox it created kinda left a bad taste in my mouth, if i wasn't such a huge time travel fan it would be excellent but i'd rate it a 7.5-8/10. solid recommendation and movie though, thanks.

9 Souls is pretty good. Look for that one.

for a sec I thought I had read '9 Songs' that porn film parading around as a indie British flick.

I was more a fan of the pacing and cinematography than the fact that it was kind of about dolls. Are they two movies similar in any other ways?
