"Oldboy"
enough said, more later...

Fearless rocks, but apparently there is another version with 40 more minutes in the canon coming.
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance was ok; different from Oldboy. Initial D is a guilty pleasure. Seven Swords is a good Tsui Hark flick. |
Daisy looks pretty good, although I've gotta say she doesn't seem that hard to kill. :)
I loved Sympathy for Lady Vengeance if you haven't seen that yet. |

A number of us (myself included) have greatly enjoyed the new Takeshi Miike "The Great Yokai War". As long as you don't mind the silly/crazy side of Asian cinema (but not a gross-out movie, if you're worried about that).

Zebraman is even better. |
I bought Fearless on DVD, and had to stop before the end. Sure, the engrish subtitles didn't help, but damn that movie sucked.
|
While a bit older (1997 to be exact),
I would highly recommend Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (Kyua). |
I really enjoyed Hong Sang-soo's Tale of Cinema.
Slightly older films I've liked were Last Life in the Universe (Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, 2003), 3-Iron (Kim Ki-duk, 2004), The World (Zhang Ke Jia), and Tropical Malady (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2004). Oh, and I haven't seen Tsai's The Wayward Cloud yest, so nobody give me crap for not including it. :) |

Blood Rain (Hyeol-ui nu)
The Neighbor No. 13 Three Times Die Bad (Jukgeona hokeun nabbeugeona) A World Without Thieves (Tian xia wu zei) Hana & Alice Kekexili: Mountain Patrol Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress Café Lumière |

I'll also add Won Kar Wai's segment of "Eros" (as well as his other movies, most of which I'm fairly certain you've heard of so I won't bother to list them). There's also a pretty nifty Thai horror film called "P" that's worth checking out. Purple Butterfly. Dolls. Few more, but it's bedtime and a lot of people have already posted my mild recommendations. -JP |

Yeah, Purple Butterfly is the Ziyi Zhang film. Definitely not for everybody, but I still recommend it based on the 50/50 of the person loving it. And Dolls is unlike anything Kitano has done. It definitely doesn't have a lot in common with Zatoichi, Fireworks, or Brother. It has a very slow, very deliberate pace with a lot of symbolism and very little dialogue. "Acquired taste" is definitely the appropriate phrase.

I'm not as up to date on Asian Cinema as everyone else here but I really enjoyed "2046"
There's so much emotional depth to it. |
As far as relatively recent Korean films go I'd recommend:
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance Git (aka Feathers in the Wind) Tale of Cinema 3-Iron The President's Last Bang A Bittersweet Life Crying Fist Marathon Welcome to Dongmakol Not as good but worth a watch: Blood Rain, Antarctic Journal, Princess Aurora, The Bow, The Duelists (some love it, some hate it) HK/China: 2046 and Kekexili Mountain Patrol Watchable: The Myth, Election, Seven Swords, The Promise, SPL Japan: Survive Style 5, Mind Game, Zebraman, A Taste of Tea Watchable: Kamikaze Girl (haven't watched Yokai War or Cutie Honey yet) For the record, I thought that Purple Butterfly was average at best. |
Oh yeah, 3-Iron was my favorite movie of '05, how did I forget that.. completely forgot it was foreign.

I've been a hot streak with the past half a dozen foreign flicks I've checked out (most of these already mentioned):
- Bittersweet Life - Tom Yum Goong - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - Friend (this is a great korean mob drama). |
- Woo-Suk Kang's Silmido
- A Tale of Two Sisters (rumoured Hollywood version in the works) |
