"RENT" - The film! (Nov 23, 2005)

wasn't this at one point being produced and shot for TV originally?
I love the trailer - what an obvious but brilliant idea to add the song "525,600 Minutes" - has me singing everytime I see it.

I've only seen the trailer online. Has it been shown in theaters? If so, what movie is it attached to?
And yeah, the website was changed to reflect the 11/23 wide date.
Gotta tack another 2 weeks to my wait unless I can find some business reason to be in LA between the 11th and 23rd.

The trailer was playing before Betwitched.
Check out www.compulsivebowlers.org, it is a very popular Rent fan board. There are links in the Movie section (and special "Footwear" section for members) to video clips of the Today Show performances (Seasons of Love and What You Own) and Bryant Park charity event (Seasons of Love and Take Me or Leave Me).
Also, Apple has the teaser up as well as the Seasons of Love music video. (basically a longer version of the teaser)

The trailer is a virtual heterosexual love-fest, showing men and women hugging each other, kissing each other, nuzzling each other. But there is no similar depiction of the gay male love that is an important part of the RENT story. Therefore, I think the trailer is homophobic.

I can't wait for this movie to come out. I saw the musical on Broadway and bought the CD because I really like it. I hope the movie is faithful to the musical.

I just hope the movie doesn't cut back the homosexual material for more mainstream appeal.

the trailer's about love. and there is scenes of both hetero and homosexual love in the trailer. therefore, i think the trailer is neither hetero or homophobic

New trailer out:
http://movies.aol.com/movie_exclusive_rent_clip
To address the homophobic trailer stuff: That's total bullshit, the movie is not "about" gay people any more than it is "about" AIDS. It is about love and human relationships. However, taking out the two aforementioned elements would ruin the movie. Considering that Jonathon Larson's family were on the set every day and watching the production like hawks, tehre is no way they removed or toned down the homosexual, AIDS, or other stuff. Fuck, one of the stars is a drag queen. So, please, just stop, or I'm going to start a thread complaining about Pat Robinson's blatant promotion of homosexuality on the 700 Club.

Clips of entire soundtrack released
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/rent/audioplayer
The entire CD has also been leaked but you won't find any links here. (But compulsivebowlers.org usually has lots of great info regarding Rent for registered members. *cough*)
At any rate, I've listened to the whole thing and it sounds INCREDIBLE, better than Chicago and leaps-and-bounds better than Phantom of the Opera. (For example, the lead can actually SING!
) It's even arguably better than the original Broadway cast recording.
Only two months left.

When's Lease getting made into a movie?

I would also rather see lease.

I really dislike that preview. The song is insidious. That doesn't mean I won't see the movie if there happens to be nothing better that week (since I like to go to a movie every week) but the preview has made me less likely to see it, not more.

Also hate the trailer. Plays like shit to audiences. Everyone groans. Don't know why anyone thinks these things translate well to the screen. Chicago was an "exception" not the rule.

Been listening to the soundtrack since last night and I must say, the only weak link--and expectedly so--is Rosario Dawson. Or maybe only because I've had Daphne Rubin-Vega's voice in my head as Mimi(Thanks shaun) for years now and hearing a different voice with the rest of the original cast is weird.
Does anybody know if these are all the songs they're doing in the movie? I know they cut out New Year's Eve but what about the other "smaller songs" like the voice mails and stuff?

Mimi. Maureen is played by Idina Menzel.
The CD contains all of the songs from the movie. New Years Eve, etc, are mainly turned into dialogue. Contact (the orgy scene) wouldn't make sense in the movie so it's gone. The voice mails are probably still there, just not sung.
To those who don't like the trailer, check out the second one. (Linked above) The first teaser was meant to play into Rent fans, the second one is a more engaging trailer, has more songs, somewhat explains the story.
And saying these shows don't translate well into film is pure bullshit. Half of the movies made from 1930 until the mid-60s were musicals, many of them the film version of Broadway shows.

I love musicals, didn't dig Chicago, and can't wait for this one. I'll agree it isn't for everyone, but I'm hoping this one will be done well and will take it's place alongside some of the greats.
Thanks for the soundtrack info! Hadn't heard the date yet. Not sure if I'll get it until I see the movie tho. Broadway soundtrack is fine for now.

Hey, I think they should make Lease into a movie. They could use real people to play puppets playing actors playing real people. They could sing about how everyone has AIDS and dies and stuf. It'd be crazy funny. lolz!!!1!!!111!
