American Splendor, Storytelling, Man on the Moon...hell, even Private Parts. It's a stretch to claim that his career as a capable actor began with Sideways. His notoriety, perhaps...but not his career.

M. Night Scamamelon, or however you spell it, always make me cringe when he's onscreen. The same with Quentin Tarantino with the exception of From Dusk Till Dawn.

I know these guys are writer/directors but do we have to suffer through their acting as well?

I actually like this movie, but his accent is not at all consistent... or good.

As far as my pick for worst actor, I'll also go with Paul Walker. I hate hate HATE this guy('s work).

What in the world is the name Giamatti doing in a thread titled "worst actor in film today"?

Oh great point my favorite scene of hers is in Alone In The Dark. When she says "This artifact has come all the way from New-Found-Land". How could anyone not catch that? I am waiting for her next role where she plays a hick moving to LA from Arr-Kansas.

BIG FAT LIAR, THUNDERPANTS, BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE, DUETS... hell, even PLANET OF THE APES. Happy?

I didn't say anything about a career starting with SIDEWAYS. Where did you get that?

I'm suggesting he's found a happy place now that doesn't require him to scream all the time like before.

Despite what anyone has to say about Keanu Reeve's mad skills, he picks some of the best projects. (A Scanner Darkly, anyone?)

He has my sincere respect because of the fact that, despite his limitations, he has genuine respect for what ends up on the screen. His tastes seem to be after my own heart (Gibson, P.K Dick [I see this joke within three posts], Ennis) so I've come to really respect the guy for trying.

I said his career as a capable actor. You implied that before Sideways, Giamatti wasn't a noteworthy tallent. I've pointed out the fact that your statement was incorrect, and now I'll be moving along. Bye then.

giamatti has gotten on my nerves whenever i've seen him. all i remember seeing him in is Confidence and American Splendor, tho i'm sure there's others.

foruntately he wasn't a big problem in Confidence, but American Splendor ... i kept watching that movie because i am a deranged and sadomaschistic fool. his character was perhaps the single=handedly most insufferable thing i've ever encountered.

if there were a 'most painful movie to sit through' thread ... i'd be posting american splendor right now.

Dont know if he's been in any other movies but I'd have to say Roy Jones Jr. (The Matrix Reloaded).

Add Jessica Alba and Tara Reid to the list. How are they still getting parts in movies and TV?
Ashton Kutcher ruined The Butterfly Effect and Paul Walker, as good looking as he is, has no range.

Nicholas Cage for the action movies that I have seen him in. He always seem to have the Elvis accent for those roles.

My nominee for worst actor is Robin Williams. How he manages to still get work is one of the mysteries of the ages...any movie can be improved by not hiring him to be in it. I can't possibly imagine how or why anyone finds him amusing.

Worst actress is Nicole Kidman. She makes Andie McDowell look like Ingrid Bergman by comparison, and manages to dumb down every movie she appears in.

By the way, Paul Giamatti absolutely sucked in Saving Private Ryan, but he's been fantastic in everything else ever since.

That is all.

I never understood why Sharon Stone was considered a great movie star. Take away three glorious seconds of leg crossing and you have a pretty sorry body of work. She's shrill and never believable except as a shallow bitch (which really isn't acting anyway). Look, I'm as big a fan of Scorsese as anyone, but how she picked up a Best Actress Oscar nod is totally beyond me (now, how she nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for The Mighty, that's much easier to explain).

edit : I just checked IMDB -- She's currently making Basic Instinct 2. Who in their right mind still wants that flick made?

And to the poster above -- I mostly agree about Robin Williams, he usually bugs the shit out of me. Still, when he plays total creeps (Insomnia, One Hour Photo), he can be interesting. But yeah, he hasn't been funny since his "Reality What A Concept" album in the late seventies. And most of his dramatic turns are at best overrated (Dead Poet's Society, Fisher King, Good Will Hunting), and at worst (Patch Adams, Bicentennial Man, Jakob The Liar) are among the worst things ever seen in cinema

Wow. Your post sums you up nicely, doesn't it.

"implied"

Anyhoo, back on topic...

Justin Chatwin, after seeing him in CHUMSCRUBBER, joins my list. Yikes.

I thought he was excellent in GWH and deserved the Oscar...DPS was ok....but for the most part, I agree with you....he is overrated in alot of his roles and sometimes downright bad.

I think your both kind of right...just swimming in circles.....In my opinion, he has never been a BAD actor, but just selected bad roles in bad movies (alot of good actors have done that).

He had to earn a living though so he accepted them. Also, he has gotten better through the years by gaining experience and so on.

Hopefully, he is big enough now where he wont be starring opposite malcolm in the middle anymore.

[QUOTE]

The Fisher King
Good Will Hunting
One Hour Photo
Dead Poets Society

But I'll agree with you that Robin's purely comedic films aren't very good...

some rappers CAN act: ja-rule in Crash, and ice cube is decent in some things. and comparing them to ben affleck and vin diesel makes them look even better.
