i had SOTL just edging out contact. but i've never seen Accused. i just think the chemistry between her and hopkins was extraordinary. it far outmatched any chemistry between her and mcconaughey.

There's not a bad performance on that list. Jodie is one of the best asexual actors in the history of cinema.
SOTL and Contact would be my favorites, but she really makes every movie she's in better than it would have been without her.
She even brought something special to her small role in A Very Long Engagement.
I can't wait to see Flightplan. It looks like it could be Panic Room 2.

MY favorite movie Jode is in would be Silence of the Lambs. The question, however, is which is her best performance. The answer to that is easily Nell followed closely by The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane.
Anthony Hopkins' performance is what made Silence great (and the writing). Not that Jodie wasn't good in her part but it certainly isn't a stand out performance considering movies like Nell, The Accused, etc.

Cool! I dig it when movie lovers can separate their personal preferences and get into just someones acting!
Not that I dont like Nell and Little girl...I like em both..Nell was very emotional and Little Girl creeped me out...I sure hope once ity debuts on dvd in Oct, my old memories of this hold up.... its almost like a modern day..The Beguiled!

From: Right now, my location is DVDTalk, but then again, you should already know that, shouldn't you?
There's no such thing as a bad Jodie Foster performance, I can say without a trace of hyperbole. I selected SILENCE OF THE LAMBS simply because of the talent required to hold one's own against Anthony Hopkins iconic portrayal of Dr. Lecter instead of quickly fading away into the background (which, to a degree, did happen with Julianne Moore's Clarice Starling in the sequel film).

I just saw A Very Long Engagement last night and haddn't realized she was in it. What a surprise to be watching a french movie and to suddenly see Jodie Foster appear in a small part speaking french and playing a frenchwoman! (Can any native french speakers attest to how well she pulled it off - I'm assuming quite well or they wouldn't have used her like that?)
She was quite good and it was a real kick to see that coming out of nowhere.

Re: Best Jodie Foster performance?
I was a little kid at that time, but maybe someone else can shed light on how was Jodie Foster was percieved during her teen to young adult years when she did a whole slew of B-movies between Freaky Friday and The Accused? This was when she was 14 years old to 26 years old. Was she still considered a big star during that time? I feel bad that I haven't seen or remembered any of those films, such as:
Stealing Home
Siesta
Five Corners
Mesmerized
Le sang des autres
The Hotel New Hampshire
Svengali
O'Hara's Wife
Carny
Foxes
Candleshoe
Casotto
Moi, fleur bleue
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane

Of this list, the only one I saw was FIVE CORNERS (1987) and I saw it at a film festival. It was written by playwright John Patrick Shanley (JOE VS. THE VOLCANO) and was a real indie.
I think the main answer to your question is that Jodie Foster was not considered a "star" until after THE ACCUSED (1988) and her Oscar win.

Her accent was a major distraction for me in Silence of the Lambs... What was that? No one talks like that.. Was it supposed to be a southern accent?

Re: Best Jodie Foster performance?
The Accused.
It's odd to me. I consider Foster to be one of the very best (well-known) actresses of the past few decades. She was also, for a time, absolutely gorgeous (circa late 80s, Stealing Home, etc.). Yet, there are actually only a very small number of films that she has been in that I am more than moderately fond of. I am a big fan of hers, but I don't think a single Jodie Foster movie appears in my personal top 100.
The Accused was a tremendous performance but it is a hard film to like. I also did not particularly care for McGillis in it.
