There are very few movies that make me cry and I'm not usually a sucker for child actors, but I tell you, that emotional scene between Roy and Alexandria broke me down. It was heartwrenchingly real and touched me deeply.
JK, I got choked up as well  |

nope, nope and nope. What kind of movie fan are you? Every true-cinema loving home theater person should have D-pends diapers and a fridge/microwave built into the couch! ;) |

http://thefall-locations.blogspot.com/ Mission to identify all the major locations in the movie. Just finished the film and overall I thought it was okay. I didn't like the end with the Hollywood stuntman footage and the little girl's narration, it just didn't feel right and soured me. The cinematography was jaw dropping. My favorite scene was probably the grayscale opening. The movie was too inconsistent and I think a lot of the bouncing back between stories didn't make a lot of sense. It was okay. 3 stars. |

This is something I wish they had done for the DVD: a text commentary track that tells you where each location was. It would be really interesting for some areas like the slowly greener valley, where it seems they jumped all over the world to get those shots.

re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
Finally got this thing on DVD. Now the trailer really pumped me up, a year ago that is, for sure cuz of that Beethoven theme going through out..but damn. That intro had amazing visuals..simple..yet so beautiful. Tarsem for sure knows how to film something for sure. I really liked it while the basic plot was in a way simple yet deep, the one thing I just learned it's a remake of Valeri Petrov's Yo Ho Ho(1981). Now I checked it out on Amazon..and they don't even carry that film. Here's the plot synopsis of Yo Ho Ho
IMDB: Spoiler:
Anyone here seen Yo Ho Ho? I'd like see it one day...alas seems it's not on R1 DVD for sure... |
re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
So I'm late to the party but I just saw this movie and I have to say I was underwhelmed. It was amazing visually and Tarsem no doubt has the talent and eye to make "strange" objects supremely pleasing but I think he lacks in the directorial department. For a film with as much focus on the personal relationship between the little girl and the infirm man, I should have been able to hear what she was saying even if she wasn't able to explain herself clearly'; at the very least they could have subtitled her speech.
Spoiler:
I think The Cell was a better film but this was amazing just to watch; it really got snubbed for Best Cinematography. |
re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
FINALLY got this fucker on BD.
Looks soooo fucking good on BD. I still love the shit out of the film. Yeah..that's all I got. Still love it. Still amazed at the imagery that is actually real..and the effects used in the film as well. EDIT: It's almost been 2 years since I got the DVD from what I see on this thread. |

 Saw it on DVD soon after and it became one of my all-time faves. Just got the Blu last week. Can't wait to see it again. |

Oh...how we change at times, no?
|
re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
watched it about a month ago on blu. First time seeing the film and although I had high hopes I was disappointed in the film.
Thought it had great ideas but fell somewhat flat. Sure the visuals were terrific but they were not enough to make this a film I loved. I went away liking it but sad that he didn't connect the dots enough. |
re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
Beautiful Film. As Ebert said "you might want to see it for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it"
|
re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
I'm in the "beautiful but empty film" camp. I blind bought the BD a while back and had some very high hopes going into it. But I thought the story got repetitive and ground to a halt as soon as they exited the fantasy world. Visually, it's one of the most arresting films I've come across, but that still isn't a substitute for a compelling story.

Re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
Discs have been OOP for a while. Hopefully Mubi puts out a 4K disc.
EXCLUSIVE: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is set to re-release Tarsem‘s cult 2006 film The Fall in a newly restored 4K version from 27 September 2024 in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world. The 4K restoration will have its world premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival where it will play on the Piazza Grande. Mubi will subsequently stream it on its service. Set in Los Angeles, circa 1920s, the visually striking movie charts the story of an immigrant girl in a hospital recovering from a fall who strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man. He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Filmed over four years in 20 different locations across the globe, the movie starred Lee Pace (Foundation, Captain Marvel), Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. The film was originally presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, with a script from Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis. Reviews were mixed for the film and it failed to ignite at the box office, but its visuals were highly praised and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, calling it a singular work: “You might want to see [it] for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it,” he said. After debuting at Toronto back in 2006, the film became very hard to track down on streaming services and director Tarsem recently expressed hope the feature would soon get a revival. Tarsem Singh, known as Tarsem, is also known for movies such as The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, The Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Self/less with Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker is also well known for his music videos, including REM’s Losing My Religion, which won MTV’s Best Video Award. In 2023, he directed his first feature film in Punjabi, Dear Jassi which won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. |

I'm guessing the streaming rights are a mess, too. I've been wanting to finally watch it, but it hasn't been streaming all year, at minimum

Re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
Funny, I was thinking about this flick recently and how I'd love to own it on 4K UHD BD. I hope they make it happen.

Re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
I still have the Blu-rays. I thought I had lost the USA released BD and bought a used copy of the UK BD (same shit) and ended up finding my original copy.

Re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
The new 4K restoration is up on Mubi now. It sounds like a UHD is planned for next year.
If anyone wants a 30 day trial of Mubi, shoot me a PM. |
Re: The Fall -- d: Tarsem Singh
Great news. For some inexplicable reason I never got this on DVD or BD. Would love to own it on 4K UHD BD.
