Just came in to pile on the praise with everyone else. Just watched this on Blu last night and it was absolutely incredible. Both my wife and I were sucked right in to both the story and the environments. I think all the comparisons to Pan's and Princess Bride are fairly accurate.

What was also interesting to me is that we have been watching various Earth documentaries such as Earth the biography and we were always blown away by those in how we can't believe places on Earth exist that they have on film. Watching The Fall I had a very similar experience. The locations and the architecture...amazing. And so much in just one film. As another poster said, my respect for Spike Jonze and David Fincher is even higher(if that were even possible) for enabling us to see this as I imagine with all the location shots it was a very expensive independent film and thus all the production companies attached to it.

I have no understanding of how how anyone can not like this movie. I hope this film gets some kind of Academy Award in order to get more people to watch it. It's right now still a word-of-mouth flick...

I agree with what others have said regarding the stunning visuals and amazing performance of the the 5 year-old actress.

I was however, left a little flat by the story. I would recommend this as a "Rent it" to friends.

This is how I feel as well. The little girl was adorably cute and it's stunning visually, but the storyline itself was weak, as was the film's resolution.

I'm thinking this thing gets a cinematography Oscar. I mean..look at it. Fucking Thing is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. The visuals are just..so unreal but..they are real...just amazing.

animatedude 10-23-08 05:14 AM

oh shit i haven't thought about that...do u actually think it would eligible for the oscars? i mean it's from last year so i don't think..

Solid Snake 10-23-08 06:24 AM

came out May 2008, so it's eligible I assumed

It started showing at festivals in 2006, so it's technically 2 years old.

Didn't start in theaters anywhere in the world until '08 tho, so it should be fine.

The Bus 10-25-08 11:09 AM

Did I pick up the wrong Blu-ray by chance? I've got about forty minutes left in this film and I don't see where the praise is coming from. Not from the story. The child actor is cloying at best.

And the visuals? Yes, they're great, but if I want to see two hours of great visuals, I'll see Baraka (which has a more engrossing narrative than this film).

I'll finish it to see if I get to the "emotional climax" that everyone is talking about but so far, it probably falls in the lower third of movies I've seen this year.

The Bus 10-25-08 11:38 AM

I'm going to have to follow advice from here, very, very carefully from now on. The movie, like The Cell, has only one thing going for it: the visuals. This, to me, puts it on par with the average Michael Bay picture. I hope that the talk here about Oscars was meant strictly for the technical categories. But all the times when the eye candy is gone, the movie is a torpid mess.

FinkPish 10-25-08 12:14 PM

What exactly made it a mess? The main story wasn't complicated at all, and the "epic" story was exactly as it should have been, being imagined by a 6 year old, being told in bits and pieces and revised by Roy as he told it.

Well, I just saw BARAKA for the first time - pretty awesome. I'm not sure whether the Baraka DVD should be an extra for The Fall DVD, or if The Fall DVD should be an extra for the Baraka DVD! The Fall was definitely influenced by Baraka - I prefer The Fall more though...

You're posting here and watching the movie at the same time?

Well, at the point where

Spoiler:
the stuntman "kills" himself

I thought the movie was over. I check the time and, no, it was far from over. So I go to make myself breakfast and jump on here. I finished it a bit later.

The Fall reminded me a little bit of 300, another movie that was a wasted opportunity. The battle (story) parts were great, but the village/politics (hospital/reality) sections were painful to watch.

The thing about the visuals is that they're not even that amazing. If you want great, real footage, see Baraka or the Planet Earth series. This felt like a 6-year old's story wrapped around perfume commercial imagery that was rejected by advertisers for being too obviously melodramatic.

And if the point was to make a movie that had a story a 6-year old would've found interesting (or wrote), then I guess I can see it as an exercise in that. But in the same way a chef might be complimented for making a sauce that tastes like burnt human hair. It's quite an accomplishment, but it doesn't mean that it's good.

The Bus 10-25-08 02:29 PM

And I don't think it's the worst movie ever, let alone the worst movie I saw this week (that's W.). But it's far from good.

RichC2 10-25-08 02:47 PM

Some movies work great for some folks and not at all for others, it happens. A lot of critics are on The Bus's side with this one.

toddly6666 10-25-08 02:53 PM

THE BUS,
what are your favorite movies by the way?

I thought THE FALL was a perfect masterpiece, and I saw W. the other day and I thought it was a good film, Oliver Stone's best film since NIXON....

The Bus 10-25-08 03:15 PM

Check my signature for my ranking of films since I joined here.

Offhand: Amores Perros, Bringing Up Baby, Children of Men, Das Leben der Anderen, Do The Right Thing, Let It Ride, Snatch., Syriana, Winged Migration, Y Tu Mamá También

These are not what I consider "the best" simply my favorite.

And once again, I'm not trying to fling vitriol at The Fall. I just expected a lot more from the praise it got here, and it was my fault for not reading reviews more thoroughly.

toddly6666 10-25-08 03:22 PM

The Bus, it's okay to hate The Fall

The Bus 10-25-08 03:25 PM

Yay!

toddly6666 10-25-08 04:47 PM

lol

iggystar 10-27-08 07:05 AM

The visuals were breathtaking, but the story and connection between Roy and Alexandria matched the visuals. The most tender "father/daughter" relationship I've seen in a long time, the dialogue and acting from the "little" actress was amazing.

I think The Cell was mainly visual, but The Fall had a story to match the visuals (and I still loved The Cell).

Drop 10-27-08 09:06 AM

I find it hard to trust someone's opinion on a film when they watch it without being completely focused. I'm sure you wouldn't like the film much more with complete attention, The Bus, but you didn't give a fair viewing.

I think it's legitimate that people can like this movie and relate emotionally to it, just as others might not. Emotion is different for everyone.

Also the places are often quite natural too, in that they weren't constructed just for the film. They didn't have a big budget, so they are very few sets or dressed up locations. They just flew all over the world to get the shots they needed.

It impresses me for a lot reason, it's a perfect marriage of visuals and emotion.

There are very few movies that make me cry and I'm not usually a sucker for child actors, but I tell you, that emotional scene between Roy and Alexandria broke me down. It was heartwrenchingly real and touched me deeply.

I didn't hate it but don't get the praise either...other than the cool visuals, there was not much for me here either.

But I can also get the same types of visual in HD on the discovery channel.

So you've never once gotten up and paused a film to use the bathroom, get a drink, grab a snack?
