The American Godzilla from '98 was really more of a remake of the American monster movie that inspired the '54 original: The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. In it, a giant iguana-like monster is awaken by a nuclear test and emerges from the sea to trash Manhattan, i.e. the same basic plot as the '98 Godzilla remake. (It's so similar, really, that it makes one wonder if Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were so clueless that they screened the wrong '50s monster movie before making their lousy movie.)

I'm pretty sure this is all approved by Toho.

I don't know if anyone read that last link very closely, but it says it's now being planned for digital 3-D, which is the process Disney uses. This works on DLP projectors and, in my opinion, is not as impressive as IMAX 3-D. It would, however, allow a hell of a lot more theaters to show it.

Toho was never funding this. It was up to Banno to get the funding.

I had only heard Banno's name attached as director, though there were Americans in other key roles. What American director was attached?
