Remakes are just another milking cow, I wish that the Dawn (2004) had nothing to do with the original and instead tried to accomplish something new. Unfortunately, did they loose the socioeconomic implications in the remake. Nonetheless, I did like the idea of zombies with natural fast twitchmuscle fibers that can generate explosive movements such as sprints. Yet, here I felt they took it from 28 Days Later... (2002). So in a sense it is a remake between Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later... . However, in 28 Days Later... the film dealt more about the evil of humanity than the zombies, or the rage diseased people. Thus, this notion of copying 28 Days Later... comes from how quickly the zombies moved in the Dawn remake, which also a new element in 28 Days Later...

Anyway, I wish that the remake would have been a completely different film with the directors own ideas and different script. Then I would also have liked the film more, but this is only my 2 cents and my own humble notions regardless what others think.

So out of the new zombie films (without rage controversy) I think : 28 Days Later... is far superior together with Shaun of the Dead. I say, those Brits know how to make good zombie films.

I HATED the Dawn remake, I couldn't stand the dialogue at all and had a hard time believing any of the characters and their stories. They all had "perfect" hair and carefree attitudes and didn't seem at all like they were in a fight for their livelihood. On the other hand, I enjoyed Land thoroughly and like it as much as Day of the Dead.

Ooooo. Good one.

Overall better movie? Dawn of the Dead.

I really enjoyed Land'. And they're really almost on par with each other. Dawn' has Zach Snyder, who blew me away with his directorial debut. The other has Romero, which, well, I have a lot of respect for. But whereas another Romero movie will be anticipated, I'm more psyched to zee what Snyder does next (the Tom Clancy movie). I mean, I'm really, really eager to how Snyder does it. I absolutely, can - not - wait.

Other than the closing nu-metal song, I just can't hate anything about Dawn. I was never saying to myself "they should have done this" (which I do A LOT). The lack of social satire was noticed, but not missed. Could it have been more 'intelligent? I guess so. But I felt really indifferent about it.

A strong, hectic opening with Johnny Cash. The nihilistic scene with Andy and Ving Rhames. The frantic pacing. CJ was a totally likable badass. There were some really poignant scenes (when Ving kills the guy turning, the ending w/CJ, Ving Rhames finding out about his brother).

There were some strong points in Land, too. The friendship between the two main characters. John Leguizamo's character.

Dawn didn't resort to mutiny - humans fighting eachother - so much. Whereas Land (and Romero's other ones) ALWAYS focus on it. Zombies almost go into the backdrop. I just see enough of it, and was ready for some teamwork ... some characters that aren't so damn confrontational with eachother. They think more logically. Dawn had stuff like that (Pheifefer's sub plot, the security guards in the first twenty minutes). But Romero's movies were overwhelmed with it.

Romero knows how to make a good zombie movie, no doubt. The man INVENTED cinematic zombies. And he's owed LOTS of credit just for that. But judging by his debut, Zach Snyder seems like he knows movies. The kind of guy that sits around and watches movies all the time. He has a good sense of what works. I think he has a future of making solid movies ahead of him.

I'd give Dawn a sold four stars out of four stars. I'd give Land three out of four.
