Of course, there are always exceptions:

1987

Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
The Untouchables (1987)
Dirty Dancing (1987)
The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

1982 – my pick for best Movie Summer ever.

The release highlights:

Conan the Barbarian - (released 14 May 1982)
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - (released 21 May 1982)
Rocky III - (released 28 May 1982)
Poltergeist - (released 4 June 1982)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - (released 4 June 1982)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - (released 11 June 1982)
Blade Runner - (released 25 June 1982)
The Thing - (released 25 June 1982)
Tron - (released 9 July 1982)
The Beastmaster - (released 20 August 1982)

It’s amazing how many movies released in this short span of months are now either classics of their genres or cult favorites. Even something as cheesy as The Beastmaster has remained a surprise favorite of certain Superstations. This was a memorable Summer for movies, one that few Summers have come close to matching in quality.
My vote as well.

And don't forget to add Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Road Warrior to that list.

1989 does look pretty good, though a few of the sequels (Ghostbusters II, Lethal Weapon II, Star Trek V) I found much weaker than their predecessors.

I pick 1986 with Aliens. That was the first year I went to movie theater with my friend and not my parents.

Ghost Busters (1984)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Gremlins (1984)
The Karate Kid (1984)
Purple Rain (1984)
That was a great Summer (although "Beverly Hills Cop" actually was a Winter '84 release). That Summer also had:

Sixteen Candles - (released 4 May 1984)
The Natural - (released 11 May 1984)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - (released 1 June 1984)
Top Secret! - (released 8 June 1984)
Conan the Destroyer - (released 29 June 1984)
The Last Starfighter - (released 13 July 1984)
Revenge of the Nerds - (released 20 July 1984)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - (released 15 August 1984)

I'm just following what Hollywood has been doing for the past few years, pushing more and more less-hyped "Summer Fare" into Spring in order to open on a weekend unopposed by a mega-hyped blockbuster and have a better chance at being the #1 for that weekend. Summer Movie Season used to start with Memorial Day Weekend, but not anymore - all of May has been fair game for years, and now the season has basically expanded more and more into April. So given that Hollywood has been doing this for the past few years, it seems fair to let someone list a movie that actually opened during Spring as a "Summer Movie". And, of course, someone could use the Memorial Day Weekend cut-off and post based strictly on that. (Whichever cut-off works for the person posting is fine with me.)
