Didn't see Colossus: The Forbin Project mentioned above. Unfortunately it is only out in Pan & Scan on DVD so I refuse to buy it.
I'll second nemein's suggestions of The Last Starfighter (one of my favorite "B" movies), Outland, and The Andromeda Strain.

One of my favorites that seems to have slipped under the radar a bit is The Puppet Masters, from 1994. Donald Sutherland is the head of a secret US intelligence agency battling an alien invasion---an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" premise. Great cast and action, tense atmosphere and very tight pacing, IMO.

wow lots of great recommendations, and I strongly agree with about 98% of them. big
to the person recommending Puppet Masters, I own this one, and it's a great B sci-fi movie.

I should have added The Hidden(1987).
Good underrated sci-fi flick. Roger Ebert said it was a "Cross between Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Terminator". I would loved to buy this DVD but Amazon.com listed this movie as Full-Screen when the OAR is 1.85:1.

I just watched The Andromeda Strain. Wow, I was entralled with this movie from the very beginning. Very cool opening. The environment of "Wildfire" with all the clean rooms and robotic arms and such was so cool.
Logan's Run is another very intriguing film.

I'd say run, don't walk, to check out a copy of Gattaca.

A few people mentioned "Andromeda Strain" though, that's a movie I haven't seen but I probably need to. I'm putting that one next on my list. For now, I've got "Metropolis" rented and I'm probably going to watch that tonight. It's the 1984 rock version, so we'll see how that turns out.
