I read the article and review today. Just before that a friend emailed and mentioned he'll be seeing it Sunday while on vacation in LA.

I saw it today, and really enjoyed it. Except for that fact that some old man was chewing gum loudly behind me, I had a great time.

I went to see this for free last night and I was crying through nearly half of the film...

from laughter!!!

I have never seen anything so funny in my entire life!

The funniest part of the South Park clip is when Cartman keeps saying "Not now Kyle".

When I first saw this topic, why did I immediately think this was going to be a live action version of the Aristocats! :o

I have been waiting for this since I heard about it. I saw it tonight as a free preview and all I can say is it's vulgar, tasteless, crude, totally politicaly incorrect and loved it :thumbsup:
Possibly the best film so far I have seen this year!- It has been a long time since I laughed this hard at the movies :)

Because if it doesn't make money now, it will never go wide.

Kind of disappointed that Mitch Hedberg isn't in it - I imagine that his take on the joke would be pretty original. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to seeing this if/when it hits the 'cuse.

How come nobody is mentioning the rapid-fire editing of the film?

For a picture that's about the magical ability of comedians to tell a joke, the film isn't too respectful to the comics by editing their timing and routines into nanosecond sections.

I didn't like the jumping from one angle to another crap. It had NO purpose....

I DID love Sarah Silverman. She was AWESOME. That was the best part.

I was impressed that there was only 3 walkouts in the theatre I saw it in....this young guy that just looked clueless and this older asian couple....though they did last longer than the young kid. :)

I saw this film on Saturday night and thought it was hilarious, I would definitely recommend everyone to see it. I agree that Sarah Silverman's part was really funny, it was definitely one of the funniest scenes in the movie, especially at the end.

I'm suprised that people actually walked out in your theatre though .. I don't believe anybody walked out when I went to see it, but there was not that many people there in the first place

They seemed like people that probably just chose a movie to get out of the heat. The theatre I saw it in probably had 200 people in it...

Yeah, that's true, didn't even think about it like that. I also went to see it at a new movie theatre, which I had never even heard of until my friend mentioned it. I don't think that many other people have checked it out yet either.

It's only in 86 theaters right now...but they averaged $10,174 per screen over the weekend!!!

I saw this today at an early matinee. I saw quite a few greyhairs coming into the theater and wondered if they knew what they were getting into, but nobody walked out.

As a whole, I enjoyed the movie. It seemed to have some excessive set-up. It felt like you didn't even get to hear the whole joked performed until 30 minutes into it. Maybe it just felt longer than it was.

The problems I have with it concern the editing. It feels like you almost never get to hear most of the comedians tell the joke from beginning to end, which you have to to get the full effect of the joke. Even the Gottfried bit at the Hefner roast, that they trump up to be the quintiscential telling of the joke, is cut up into about 5 segments, which just kills the effect and the pacing. I realize you can't just have a movie of people telling the joke one after the other, I just remember getting annoyed at points, because they cut away just when I was getting into whichever particular telling was onscreen at the time.

Silverman was great, as were the mime and the card trick version. It was nice to see alternate tellings, and to see them through completion in one take instead of over the duration of the film like most of the others.

just saw it and it was okay.... actually my experience was kind of like the joke.. tons of hype and people talking about it and then i saw it and it was "meh"

agree with monkeyboy's comment although it would be hard to edit it.. you don;t want to have 100 people each go through the whole joke

i thought gilbert gottfried did some stuff about 9/11 at the roast.. they kind of referenced it, but I thought it was actually part of the joke

Biggest dissapointment of the year.

The film is not a bad film by any means. Hell, it's far from that area. However, I walked into the theater this evening expecting something far different than what I was served up. I went in expecting a 90 minute "documentary" in which the first 15-20 minutes set up the history/backstory/premise of the joke and for the remaining running time justs lets comedians tell their different variations of the joke.

The final product is far from that. It also doesn't help matters much that the rapid fire editing (as Shelton coined it) comes off (in my opinion) as completely scattershot. The film at times doesn't know if it wants to be funny or informative. And for a documentary which premise is based off the different ways a single joke could be told, you think you'd hear many, numerous ways one can tell it. Sadly, one never is shown that. We're only given a handful of interpretations on how the joke can be told and the flick comes off as a bunch of comedians participating in a big mutual masturbation fest. Which I have no problems with, but if I'm going to be watching a bunch of comedians stroking one another for 90 minutes, I better be able to hear the goddamn joke told with no interruptions and some breathing room.

Sigh, under someone else's supervision, this documentary could've been spectacular... but leaving the theater, I just felt as if the film was very anti-climatic.

i have a feeling the dvd might redeem this movie as i hope they have some of the comedians just telling the whole joke all the way through
