'Hustle' up: Col readies sequel
CANNES -- Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group is prepping a follow-up to Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" as Sony Pictures celebrates seven years of concentrated activity in international production in the Far East and a huge international rollout of "Hustle." Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia managing director Barbara Robinson said Chow and his writing team from "Hustle," including Tsang Kan Cheong, have been writing a draft in the evenings while on the road for the 30-country Sony Pictures Releasing International rollout of the film. The team, gearing up to co-host what will be one of the biggest parties during this year's Festival de Cannes with MTV on Saturday, said the rollout of "Hustle" had been "unprecedented in size and scope" for an Asian filmmaker.

Thank god it was such a hit overseas; it seems if foreign movies relied on the American market for their sequels, there would never be any. Ironic since a bulk of an American made movie's profit comes from overseas sales.

So no "Kung Fu Hustle 2" for now?
I saw this link at IMDB: http://filmick.blogspot.com/2006/07/...in-action.html
The announcement is not exactly new but it's not exactly old either. So, anyone have any more details regarding this?

I thought Chow was doing some space thing or some such before KH2? Has he ever directed a sequel?

The link I posted relates to the sci-fi feature he is now working on. Yeah, I had read a while back that was indeed working on a sequel to Kung Fu Hustle but it seems he decided to put it on hold. To be honest, I'm glad. I loved Kung Fu Hustle but I don't see the need for a sequel.

I'm really not surprised. I remember when he was going to do a sequel to Shaolin Soccer immediately after that film, then moved on to do Kung Fu Hustle. I don't think he's particularly interesting in writing and directing sequels. I think he should continue working on original projects until one fails. Then he'll have the sequels to fall back on.

The long awaited sequel to Stephen Chow’s 2004 smash hit Kung Fu Hustle is finally happening!
During his recent promo interview for The New King Of Comedy, Chow revealed that Kung Fu Hustle 2 is officially in the works. He will direct and possibly cameo in the film after the Mermaid sequel is complete. However, it would not be a traditional sequel but more of a spiritual follow-up that actually takes place in modern day.

I liked the Mermaid, didn't like Journey to the West as much, but it seems clear Chow is more interested in writing/directing nowadays than acting.

I watched it recently and loved it much more than Shaolin Soccer. I’m not sure I want to watch a sequel without him though...

I watched about 30 minutes of King Fu Hustle and turned it off - back in 2005 - 2006. It was awful. I loved Shaolin Soccer, though. I'd rather see part 2 to that than this.

I liked KFH better than Shaolin Soccer.

Chow's NEW KING OF COMEDY -- a remake/reboot/whatever of one of his best Hong Kong pictures -- is apparently raking it in, so I'm not surprised to see this coming down the line. Still a damned shame he's abandoned his Hong Kong Cantonese roots to pander to the Mainland, but that's where the money's been for him for a while now and his comedy style is quite unmatched there to there's not much competition. And, unlike his former HK industry compatriot Jackie Chan, he doesn't seem to have become an odious mouthpiece for the communist party.

I can't imagine Chow not being at least a cameo. Probably some disciples try to seek him out and the movie is their wacky hijinks along the way to find him.
