I'm a Sin City fanboy.

That said, The Pacifier will ultimately out gross Sin City regardless. Family DVDs sell better than ones with a cult following, Family movies sell better in theaters both foreign and domestic, and Family Movies get picked up by channels like ABC for a ridiculous amount of money.

Sure, Sin City will be longer remembered, but The Pacifier will be used in more ways, shapes and forms. Sin City will basically go Theater -> DVD/Pay Per View -> Starz! (guessing, since Dimension is owned by BV, aren't they?) whilst The Pacifier will go Theater (where it will likely be more successful than Sin City) -> DVD/Pay Per View (also, likely to be more successful than Sin City, since it isn't just a family film, it's also a comedy) -> Starz! (Buena Vista for both SC and TP isn't it?) -> The Disney Channel -> ABC -> ABC Family -> TBS -> Fox movie at 3.

Also, you underestimate the modern mom. Only buy $5 DVDs? Hahaha.

Go hang out at a Walmart for an hour :P

Exactly. And with the quick theatrical to video turn around, when The Pacifer is released in June; tons of parents will be picking the film up for their children.

You do realize that most Americans now own DVD players, right?

Maybe the not so good showing for FEVER PITCH is because it opens the same week baseball does. So the public would rather go see a real ball game instead of a movie about baseball.

I know based on the commercials, I would pick Vin Diesel's movie over Sincity. Pet duck=comedy gold. Sincity, artsy b/w film = avoid like ebola. But I didn't see either so neither got my $$$.

A disturbing look into the mind of the average movie-goer.

So anybody else care to discuss how Sahara somewhat lackluster opening will probably kill it's chances at becoming a new franchise?

Sure it did about what people expected, but for a movie that cost $130 mil. you would have to think that the Dirk Pitt character will probably be out of the public eye (ar far as film is concerned) for another 25 years. I would be very surprised if it makes back little more than half the money it cost domestically. It will likely do o.k. overseas and on DVD though.

Like it or not, The Pacifier has more of an audience than Sin City.

You took a four month old to see Sin City?

Looking at what the top movies are week after week, I would be embarrassed to be placed into that group of viewers. Thus as far as films go, if I'm not smarter, let's just say I'm way more discerning.

As for Sahara, I've got quite a few friends who intend to see it but haven't yet. This weekend here in St. Louis was the nicest weekend so far this year, I'd be willing to bet that hot dog and hamburger buns was the #1 "ticket" sold this weekend. I'll probably catch it sometime in the next few weeks. Then again I've said that about probably 10 movies this year and haven't caught them yet, even on DVD. Sin City has been my only "must see" so far this year. I actually intend to see it again on the big screen, ideally in an uncroweded theater. I only see a movie twice in theaters about once every 3 years but this one undoubtedly deserves it.

Intelligence and taste are not mutally exclusive.

Though I do have to wonder about someone who finds Vin Diesel with a duck "Comedy gold" and a $40 million film from the director of the Spy Kids trilogy and the screen writer of Robocop 2 & 3 to be some kind of art film.

Geofferson 04-11-05 09:39 AM

Yikes -- pretty steep drop off for Sin City.

Paramount didn't pay that bill, and the opening was above what they were expecting.

Why would I be banned? That's not a personal attack, unlike what you said to Cameron. (Which you've now gone back and deleted, making it look like I did attack you. Nice work.)
