Make this a tad more interesting . . . what was cut and why? (Or, in the case of South Park, what was added!)

Team America . . . . puppet sex!

what actually was cut from South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut ?

I own the UK edition and it's interesting to note that Cartman utters the C word at the end of the film, that isn't in the US R-rated cut of the film.

Also, I find it rather interesting that the new "Orgazmo" dvd while exclaiming 'Unrated' actually carries a NC-17 rating at the lower left corner of the back-cover of the DVD.

Films off the top of my head that were edited down to receive their R-ratings include:

- Starship Troopers
- Desperado
- Valentine
- But, I'm A Cheerleader

The Orgazmo DVD contains two versions of the film.

1. The original "theatrical cut" of the film which is rated NC-17 by the MPAA.
2. Trey Parker's "original (unrated) cut" of the film which was originally rated NC-17 by the MPAA. HOWEVER, Trey Parker edited two minutes out of the film in hopes to get that R rating, but it never happened. Thus his "original cut" is not rated by the MPAA and thus the "UNRATED" banner on the front of the DVD.

As the story goes, nothing was cut from South Park. The story claims that every time the MPAA slapped Parker and Stone with an NC-17, they actually made the film more taudry for the next submission. This supposedly happened several times before they received an R for a movie that was far "worse" than the original submission. Hence, the title "Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" is not actually an African-American/Jewish/Penis joke.

I don't really remember, but I think an extra masturbation scene might have cost Boogie Nights an NC-17.

Natural Born Killers had to remove a lot of shots before getting cut to an R. Interestingly, I heard that the most objectionable shot was where we see a bullet-hole through someone's hand. But From Dusk 'til Dawn has a shot JUST like this, and that ended up playing in theaters with an R.

South Park : Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was originally called "South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose"

The MPAA told them that they couldn't use the word "Hell" in the title because then it would be all over movie posters! Give me a break. So they changed it to the more vulgar "Bigger, Longer, and Uncut", and there was nothing the MPAA could do about it because technically, it also might be comparing it the tv show (which in that case, it was bigger, longer, and uncut). They told this story on Conan once.

Friday the 13th part 2, 6, 7, and 9 got the NC-17 (or X) on first submission.
Night of the Living Dead 1990 got an NC-17 on it's first submission (because of all the head exit wounds which had to be removed)

Predator 2. I don't think the NC-17 version is still in existence. Hopefully someone can tell me otherwise.

Boondock Saints - 7 seconds, mostly close-ups of gunshots, were cut to receive an R rating.

Scarface

The film was given an X rating 3 times (original, 2nd, and 3rd cuts) by the MPAA until director Brian De Palma pulled in a panel of experts, including real narcotics officers, who stated that the film was an accurate portrayal of real life and should be widely seen. This convinced the 20 members of the ratings board to give it an R rating by a vote of 18-2. DePalma then decided to release the original version of the film, since all 3 versions had been given an X rating and he felt the differences were insignificant.

How about Midnight Cowboy, The Wild Bunch and Last Tango in Paris? I believe NC-17 was not around at that time and they were released with an "X" rating.

I seem to recall hearing on the commentary that Predator 2 was actually the first movie to ever receive the NC-17 when it became an offical rating. This was probably back several months before its release.

True, but as time went on, the MPAA lowered Midnight Cowboy and The Wild Bunch's rating to an R (with no edits) whereas Last Tango In Paris still holds that X/NC-17.

House Of 1000 Corpses... Cut down quite a bit to get an R.
Orgazmo's two cuts still hold an NC-17 & Unrated.
True Romance, Reindeer Games, Rated X & The Getaway all had to be cut to get an R.

Thats bullshit!! (not your statement, but the MPAA) they are such morons. Not having Hell on the poster, thats just stupid!!

Rio Lobo had Hell on the poster and nobody gave a shit back in 1970 damn

I love this poster by the way

The language joe Boo

The MPAA felt it was 'too much' for an R rating so they gave it an NC-17. Until Kevin and Miramax fought them so to speak and on appeal. It was given an R with no cuts.

I think rating a movie NC-17 for language alone is absolutely pathetic!

With how unfair and inconsistent they hand out the NC-17 to anything that goes against their 'morals' or whatever. I think it should just not exist and leave R high enough.

more titles they handed out NC-17's until cuts were made

Basic Instinct.....sex/nudity and violence were cut/toned down in the R version with alternate angles and many seconds removed from a few sequences.

Showgirls...R version created for home video had alternate angles and 3 minutes of cuts to many sequences throughout the film. Frankly having seen both the R & NC-17 versions. I think the NC-17 version could easily be R rated in uncut form

Two Girls and a Guy..for a sex scene that involves NO nudity in a film that otherwise just is a 'talky' picture. Another could be R uncut "NC-17" feature.

Dawn of the Dead:2004...another unrated version could easily be R in my honest opinion. Brief nudity and alot of extra gore(that is not 'too' gory besides a couple shots) was cut in the R version.

From Beyond..originally given an X. Alot of grue and some nudity was cut and has not seen the light of day since. The footage was found recently and MGM is planning an uncensored SE dvd release for sometime in 2006. So it's time to jump for joy and say fuck you too the MPAA

Scream...20 seconds of not so graphic footage featuring a tiny bit of blood(& one brief glimpse of guts). Also the audio was 'toned down' abit as well and it then got an R. The uncut version is on laserdisc though wth the awsome original loud audio mix.
