Cool Hand Luke as Christ Allegory

I'd seen bits and pieces of this movie before (though I must admit all I remember was the eggs, and the lady washing her car ) but I finally watched the thing all the way through last week.

I'm not from a Christian family, so I'm not surprised that I never picked up on a lot of the parallels and imagery before. It was pretty interesting to go in with that frame of reference, and see all that stuff.

Was this movie controversial when it was first released? Any other thoughts?

Well, the biggest problem with this allegory is that Christ didn't actually do anything wrong, whereas Cool Hand Luke actually broke the law and got caught. And then broke the law again... and then broke the law again...etc.

OK, then, illegal. He didn't steal or try to escape his imprisonment.

True, but once he was in prison, he is punished (put in the box) without any further wrongdoing, simply because the warden is worried he'll try to esacpe to attend his mother's funeral.

Obviously it's not a perfect parallel.

Do you want to actually discuss something or just negate everything I post?

Tell you what - I love Cool Hand Luke... and while I'm not so up with jesus, I think that if you see a connection then it is there for you.

relax - it was two posts, dude... I am having a discussion. Don't make this personal. I didn't even notice I was replying to the same person.

I'm sorry, but it is annoying when I try to get involved in a discussion and people just post one sentence responses that essentially say "no, you are wrong," without adding anything else.

Fair enough - I didn't want to get soapboxy and derail this thread too far, so I just posted short replys. It's been a long time since I've seen CHL and even longer since I've read any bible.

I don't think you would be derailing it. I think we would have to discuss those types of things to see if the two stories match up at all.

On the surface, the stories do have a vague connection: basically, an agitator gives hope to those who have none. They both try to buck the system and rebel against "the man." They were both non-conformists. But from the Christian perspective, Luke was a criminal and Jesus was sinless. But outside of that Christian perspective, they do carry each other well. I guess it depends on the viewers' perspective.

Thanks for the link, Cameron. I hadn't noticed the significance of Luke's prisoner number being 37 before.

Relevant to some of the above discussion is also this passage from the Bible:
