OK, for months I have been trying to figure out the name of a comedy that was a spoof of thrillers.

I only remember two scene bits: one has a character (the killer?) breathing VERY heavily in the dark, and another has the same character stepping on gum.

I know, not much here to describe the film, but hopefully someone will bite.

Yea, not much...but I guess one of the Scary Movie trilogy or Not Another Teen Movie.

Sounds like Student Bodies to me.

The killer was called The Breather. He made prank calls breathing heavily into the phone. He was going up the stairs in one scene to kill a couple by using a paper clip and he steps in a big wad of gum on the stairs.

Snowmaker beat me to it...Student Bodies was my guess as well.

And I've only seen the movie maybe ONCE about 18 years ago.

That's about the last time I saw it too. I loved the bit where the guy comes out and explains about how what it takes to make a film R-rated.
