Need recommendations for good War movies
Been getting into war movies, so far I've got:
Saving Private Ryan Band of Brothers We were soldiers Enemy at the Gates Full Metal Jacket Tai Guk Gi I saw Apocalypse Now and didn't enjoy it. |
Three Kings is excellent, if a bit more modern (about the Gulf War)
Black Hawk Down, also a modern war tale (Somalian conflict) Glory (about Civil War) is also excellent The Great Escape (WWII) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (also WWII) Jacob's Ladder (kinda tangentially about Vietnam) Paths of Glory (WWI) Schindler's List (WWII) Dead Presidents or Platoon (DP also dabbles in Vietnam) Master & Commander (about naval wars of the 1800's) There's a start ... :) Hope that helps! |

Midway
Memphis Belle - one of my all time favorites Run Silent, Run Deep |
DEFINITELY Black Hawk Down and Behind Enemy Lines, those'd fit right in with your movies.

Story of G.I. Joe
The Train Patton Stalag 17 |
Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are two of my favourite War films. I also really like The Killing Fields and Paths of Glory but they are a different type of war than the ones you listed.

THE BIG RED ONE. (But wait for the recent "reconstruction" to hit DVD.)

A few other war movies I haven't seen listed above: Twelve O'Clock High Dr. Strangelove Grave of the Fireflies |
Johnny Got His Gun http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067277/
|
All Quiet on the Western Front
its probably the best anti-war movie ive seen. |
How about these movies: War and Peace (very good story)
The Four Feathers,The Partiot (mel gibson) The Pianist (WWII),Lawrence of Arabia (The best film of the 60's for me) The Last Samurai, The Seven Samurai..... |
"A Walk In The Sun", "The Best Years Of Our Lives", "Destination Tokyo", "Bataan","Empire Of The Sun",
"They Were Expendable", "Mister Roberts", "Hangmen Also Die" - all WW II... . . . :o . . . |
Here's one not been mentioned so far:
Savior IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120070/ A fantastic film that really pulls no punches. Can't recommend this film enough. It's very grim and very moving. |
The Thin Red Line
Black Hawk Down All Quiet on the Western Front Paths of Glory |
Although it's already been mentioned, I got caught up watching The Great Escape on TCM the other night and was reminded how much I completely love this wonderful movie. While it's not a "battle" film, if you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Another vote for The Train. Paths of Glory, The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Dirty Dozen also top my list of recommendations.
|
Black Hawk Down
Master & Commander Force 10 from Navarone The Eagle has Landed The Bridge on the River Kwai Platoon Apocalypse Now The Deer Hunter These are my favorites. |
Well, all the war movies that came to my mind are already mentioned, but I'll throw "Gallipoli" in the fray as well.
|
Bitka na Neretvi (AKA The Battle of Neretva)
By the way, if anyone knows where I can find the uncut version or anything longer that the 106 min version please send me a private message. |
If you were to ask me to name just one war movie to see, I'd say Platoon
|
Here are some classics and some oddly interesting ones
These are some great world war II flicks of the old school:
Guadalcanal Diary Sands of Iwo Jima Sink the Bismarck ! The Battle of Britain Tora Tora Tora Midway Bomber Command The Best Years of Our Lives The Bridge over the River Kwai Tobruk Judgement at Nuremberg Good old school Korean War Flick: The Bridges at Toko-Ri One new one I didnt see mentioned: Windtalkers (get ready !) OffBeat, but cool: The Eagle has Landed Zeppelin The Blue Max News from the Forest The Man who Would be King Henry the V (with Olivier) Spartacus The Warlord ( Heston and Boone 1968) 55 Days at Peking (cool-Boxer rebellion of 1901) Ronin ( Akiro Kurasawa ) As You Can See, I'm a War flicks afficionado ! |
Not a war movie but set in a war and one of the best court room drama's ever filmed IMO, Breaker Morant.

Not a "serious" war movie and I haven't seen it in years, but I used to love watching Kelly's Heroes.
|
Looks like all the good ones have been previously mentioned, but here are the ones I've enjoyed:
All Quiet on the Western Front Apocalypse Now Band of Brothers Battle of Algiers Black Hawk Down Braveheart Das Boot Dr. Strangelove Enemy at the Gates Full Metal Jacket Henry V Platoon Saving Private Ryan Schindler's List Spartacus The Bottom Line The Deer Hunter The General The Last of the Mohicans The Pianist Edit: Grave of the Fireflies (warning: this is the second saddest movie I've ever seen. I took a chance and watched it for the second time just earlier this week, and I bawled so hard. It's terribly heartbreaking, but nonetheless, a beautiful film. Probably not something you could stomach more than twice in a lifetime). |
...since, as a mere boy (from ages 8 to 12) I was a 'guest' in a couple of Japanese internment camps (in what was then the Dutch East Indies, and is now Indonesia), I thought it might be a good idea to refer to the (very rare!) movies made on the subject:
"Three Came Home" (available on a plain Jane DVD) "A Town Like Alice" (available on R2/UK DVD) "Empire Of The Sun" - already mentioned above "A Town Like Alice" - British/Australian mini-series "Paradise Road" - an Australian fim "Furyo" - a.k.a. "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" - a Japanese/British/New Zealand film, probably the best of the bunch... ... :o ... |
Empire of the Sun, great choice, Hendrik!
Another great not-serious war movie, 1944 :) |
|
|
some recomendations:
Blue Max (WWI planes, no computer graphics, real planes) Iron Cross (WWII, the Russian front, good T-34 scenes on action) A Bridge too far (WWII, far from the Holyoodesque typical film, the history of an allied loose!!) |
Paths of Glory and The Great Escape are must-see war films!
