Need recommendations for good War movies
Been getting into war movies, so far I've got:
Saving Private Ryan Band of Brothers We were soldiers Enemy at the Gates Full Metal Jacket Tai Guk Gi I saw Apocalypse Now and didn't enjoy it. |
Three Kings is excellent, if a bit more modern (about the Gulf War)
Black Hawk Down, also a modern war tale (Somalian conflict) Glory (about Civil War) is also excellent The Great Escape (WWII) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (also WWII) Jacob's Ladder (kinda tangentially about Vietnam) Paths of Glory (WWI) Schindler's List (WWII) Dead Presidents or Platoon (DP also dabbles in Vietnam) Master & Commander (about naval wars of the 1800's) There's a start ... :) Hope that helps! |

DEFINITELY Black Hawk Down and Behind Enemy Lines, those'd fit right in with your movies.

Story of G.I. Joe
The Train Patton Stalag 17 |
Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are two of my favourite War films. I also really like The Killing Fields and Paths of Glory but they are a different type of war than the ones you listed.

THE BIG RED ONE. (But wait for the recent "reconstruction" to hit DVD.)

|
All Quiet on the Western Front
its probably the best anti-war movie ive seen. |
How about these movies: War and Peace (very good story)
The Four Feathers,The Partiot (mel gibson) The Pianist (WWII),Lawrence of Arabia (The best film of the 60's for me) The Last Samurai, The Seven Samurai..... |
"A Walk In The Sun", "The Best Years Of Our Lives", "Destination Tokyo", "Bataan","Empire Of The Sun",
"They Were Expendable", "Mister Roberts", "Hangmen Also Die" - all WW II... . . . :o . . . |
Here's one not been mentioned so far:
Savior IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120070/ A fantastic film that really pulls no punches. Can't recommend this film enough. It's very grim and very moving. |
The Thin Red Line
Black Hawk Down All Quiet on the Western Front Paths of Glory |
Although it's already been mentioned, I got caught up watching The Great Escape on TCM the other night and was reminded how much I completely love this wonderful movie. While it's not a "battle" film, if you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Well, all the war movies that came to my mind are already mentioned, but I'll throw "Gallipoli" in the fray as well.
