Could it be the 1957 version of A Farewell to Arms? The woman is a nurse, not a teacher though, and she's not Italian but it takes place in Italy.

The only thing she seems to be 100% sure of is that SHE was an Italian school teacher and HE was an American.

That looks like mostly a war movie. I'll ask her tonight but I'm sure the movie she means was a romance.
