The Ring 2 - The Curse is Real & I'll be dead in 6 days.

So my roommate got some videotape from "someone" at his school... it had no labels on it anywhere. He said "all I know is that it has something to do with the new Ring movie"... and he wanted to watch it. I asked my girlfriend to come in and watch, but she refused. She didn't seem scared, but rather more like she thought it was stupid.

My roommate and I spent a few minutes speculating what it would be before watching it and I figured it would be a creepy cursed tape footage while he figured it would be just a trailer or something.

Anyway - we watched it and sure enough it's the same sort of weird clips of random creepy stuff you would expect from a cursed video tape. After watching it, I just kinda dismissed it. But he's been perhaps a little freaked out about it. He even took pictures of himself... he says they turned out fine. Oh - neither of us got a call either.

At the end of the tape for a few seconds, they flash a website address. He visited it and told me to do the same. He said it's creepy, but I don't see anything but more blair witch paranoia. See for yourself - www.she-is-here.com There's even people submitting pictures of themselves badly photoshopped to indicate they have watched it and are going to die.

There's also stories of people having strange experiences and a forum where people can discuss it. Some people on the forum seem truly freaked out by it. Anyone else get this tape and watch it? Are you dead? Inquiring minds want to know.

Sounds like a PR stunt...and a good one, too. It gives it more of a "is it real, or isn't it" feel, like BWP had before everyone knew it was fake. It makes sense for them to make up a tape and start circulating it around the college. All you have to go is give one to a few frats or something. They watch it and give it to someone else, and so on. It's like when someone starts a rumor about you...it keeps growing and growing. People start freaking out, which causes more talk about the movie. Opening day comes, and everyone who has been talking about it is there to watch it.

You'd better kill yourself in 6 days or Dreamworks will do it for you.

sucks for you! but i don't feel bad for you as you should have known not to put in a tape that wasn't labeled. i mean c'mon!

I hope that in six days there's a busy thread about Alien Vs. Predator or Alone In The Dark, just so I can know someone whose last words were used to defend Uwe Boll and/or Paul WS Anderson.

Hey now... for one, I agreed that AvP sucked. Two, I agreed that Uwe Boll sucked - I just didn't think he sucked bad enough to be worth talking about that much or to be considered "the worst" given how many other terrible directors are out there. Maybe I'll make my last comment something about Liz Phair...

update - I'm still alive... I've taken pictures of myself which turned out fine. My back hurts like a motherfucker, but that's nothing new really.

Anyone else encounter this marketing tool yet?

I'd kill myself before seeing The Ring 2. The first one was more than enough for me.

Back hurts? Maybe you should see Shutter to find out the cause.

I don't get the reference... is Shutter a movie?

Fok - The original Japanese versions are good... and I thought the US version was good as well in its own ways. I'd say the Japanese versions are better, but saying they are a lot better is a bit of a stretch. It also makes a difference which version you see first.

Going by past threads, it seems many prefer whichever version they saw first. I saw the US version first and found it to be the more enjoyable of the two (except for the ending).

I liked the Ring. It's just pictures of a certain actress that talks to god from the movie I don't like.

::shudder::

I've had some bad experiences with those.

I thought there might be a PR gimmick like this for the sequel. I also thought it would be interesting if trailers started appearing on TV which basically look like there is some interference with your TV signal, a few weird images appear, and then the shot of the well with the girl climbing out. Having seen the first one, I know if it was late at night and I saw something like that, I would probably kill myself running out of the living room before it finished.

I'm sure they had the same idea. The sad thing is, though, people who get fooled by these "meta" ads... tend to sue!
Remember the Orkin ads with the cockroach on the screen?

The only ones I can think of since are those Geico ads, but they saturate the market so much, I wonder does anyone notice.

Did people really sue over the cockroach ad? How can I get in on it? Gave me a heart attack a few times. I friggin hate cockroaches.

I also wanna sue over the Tiny House ad because it's not a real show and it gets my hopes up.

The cockroach gag was definitely stolen from an X-Files episode, "War of the Coprophages". The plot revolved around man-eating cockroaches, and in one scene, they made it appear as though a single cockroach was crawling across your screen...I was probably 12 or 13 the first time I watched the episode, and it scared the crap out of me. I woke up my parents and had them search my room for bugs...didn't realize that it wasn't real until I rewound the tape.
