movies that took you a long time to finish

basically, are there any movies where you needed a couple of sittings to watch the full movie.

for me, maganolia took me a few times, since i always had something to do during the movie, and i think 2001 5 times before i was able to stay awake the entire movie. its not that the movie was boring at all (its a great movie that i still don't understand the full movie), its just has images that kind of lull you to sleep.

jaeufraser 02-10-05 11:53 PM

Alien versus Predator. Took me four nights to finish this movie. Probably has something to do with it sucking. Some of the SFX were nice though.

astrochimp 02-11-05 12:19 AM

New York Minute, kept running outta kleenex ;)

look4sheep 02-11-05 12:21 AM

seven samurai, i think it took me almost an entire year. It felt really long when I was watching it.

The Infidel 02-11-05 12:43 AM

Hero was my most recent one. My boss gave me his brand-new copy around Christmas time, since he had already seen it, hated it, and was given the very movie he hated as a Christmas present. I watched the first hour of it, it froze up, and I never had the time to go see if I could con BB out of a new copy, since I had no receipt, and my boss had no idea where it was actually purchased. I finally went to BB this last weekend, got a new copy, and finished watching it. :)

ivelostr2 02-11-05 12:48 AM

Solaris, the Russian one. ALmost 3 hours, but it felt like 8, and it took 4 days...

DonnachaOne 02-11-05 01:07 AM

I bought The Duellists quite some time ago. I tackled it several times for brief moments over the course of a few years.

jaeufraser 02-11-05 01:21 AM

I'l add Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as another film that took me quite some time to finish. I think I watched it four times before I got to the end. Everytime I saw it I was so wasted I kept passing out before the end of the movie.

Cameron 02-11-05 01:33 AM

i never take more than one sitting for a movie....i will pause for a bathroom break, but can't stand spreading a movie over a few days...it ruins it for me

I'd give Vida's an 8, and Jennifer Lopez's an 8.5

The most recent one was In the Cut, an unbelievably bad Meg Ryan movie. It's not that long, but it still took me about two weeks to get through it. It started out lousy, but I wanted to see nooditity and then I figured I might as well see how it ended.

Same exact story here. I had recorded this on my DVR a few months back. I did not care for it at all, but for some reason wanted to watch it in its entirety. I watched it in 20-minute intervals spanned over the course of a week or so.

TheMadMonk 02-11-05 09:05 AM

Most recently, Bubba Ho-tep took me 3 days to get through. Kept falling asleep.

Maxflier 02-11-05 09:11 AM

Seven Samurai took me 2 days to watch.Besides it being very long,it is extremely boring to boot.

Iceberg1 02-11-05 12:19 PM

I've seen the beginning of Princess Bride a million times since the days of my childhood, but for some reason I have never gotten to the end. It's as though I always had to go somewhere or had something to do. Damn, I really got to finish that movie sometime.

Mondo Kane 02-11-05 12:29 PM

Manhunter.Rented it during the mid-80's but fell asleep about 25 minutes into it. Never got to finish the movie until 2000 because it was one of the first DVDs I rented.

I still haven't been able to finish Barry Lyndon yet.

lopper 02-11-05 01:33 PM

Seven Samurai for me as well. I started watching it about 8 months ago and made it all the way to intermission, but that's as far as I got. Haven't put it back in the player since.

ShagMan 02-11-05 03:19 PM

Lawrence of Arabia... GOD that was a long movie.

Different tastes and all that ... watching this was the fastest three hours I ever spent in a theater. Haven't seen it on DVD so the experience might be different.

My longest DVD is probably The Limey, when you include watching it, then playing it two more times to listen to the commentaries, it probably took a week in 40 minute chunks. It seemed long ... probably due to me thinking that I should like the movie more than I actually did. It's a terrific DVD (excellent transfer, sound, commentaries, extras), only a so-so to good movie IMO.

QuikSilver 02-11-05 05:45 PM

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Because the movies are so freakin long!!

BenboC 02-11-05 05:46 PM

It took me five or six sittings to finish Amores Perros. It simply didn't really interest me.

PopcornTreeCt 02-11-05 10:15 PM

Probably Ray because my DVD kept messing up and I had to change players. I see now that I have accomplished the task many haven't, I've sat through all of Seven Samurai, enjoyed it, and have sat through it again numerous times over.

tasha99 02-11-05 11:42 PM

Derrida. I thought I should watch it since I was an English major, but I didn't really want to so I broke it up into 15 minute segments.

Heartagram 02-12-05 12:08 AM

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly have watched the first 2 hours but have yet to finish this from January 2004.

cruzness 02-12-05 12:57 AM

Insomnia - Started watching it over 18 months ago and I seem to keep falling asleep.

get off your computer and crank up the dvd player....amazing end

conscience 02-12-05 02:05 AM

I HATE HATE HATE to say this as I KNOW I will get flamed (but when I actually sat down with the time allotted to spare and really delved into the film...it was actually really good)...but it took me three nights to watch the entirety of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I don't know if it was because of lack of sleep for final exams or what, but I just COULD NOT get into it at that time...and I just kept stopping it and doing something else with my time.

Also The Piano Teacher. A real snooze fest that took me a week. Glad it was a rental.

The irony...

Absolut 02-12-05 04:56 PM

Ditto on Seven Samurai. Though not because it's boring, it's just really long. I thoroughly enjoyed it I just couldn't get through it all in one sitting. Same with, The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

conscience 02-12-05 05:00 PM

Oh yeah other ones for me (can't believe I forgot to put in my other post) were the Lord Of The Rings films.

RyoHazuki 02-12-05 05:18 PM

Seven Samurai for me as well. It took about two years. I really liked the film, but I always started it when it was late and I fell asleep through it.

chente 02-13-05 09:15 PM

The Mark of Zorro. I fell asleep watching it last year sometime when it first came out and got caught up with newer purchases and never went back. Coincidently, I've been laid up with the mother of all flus the last two days and finally got around to watching it. I really enjoyed it.

I do a lot of movie watching when I'm sick. Speaking of the Seven Samurai, the first time I saw it four years ago I was similarly sick and watched it, then immediately watched it again with the commentary. That's about 7 hours right there. I then plopped in Orson Welle's Macbeth which put me to sleep in about 20 minutes. I still haven't gotten back to that one.

whaaat 02-14-05 01:32 PM

Metropolis (1927) for me, I kept fallng asleep.

And Attack of the Clones, I rented it when it first came out on DVD, again kept falling asleep. Returned it after 2 days and haven't revisited it since (though I might before Ep III this spring).

garmonbozia 02-14-05 01:57 PM

silent films almost always put me to sleep......and some of them I enjoy anyway......but the worst one that probably took me the longest was Birth of a Nation...took me about 5 different sittings picking up where i fell asleep each time. I thought it was god-awfully boring....

fnordboy 02-14-05 02:23 PM

Kill Bill Vol. 1. I still have not finished that movie. It was just so awful and boring that it kept putting me to sleep. I gave it a few nights, but could never get through it. Eventually I will....probably. Generally I will try to finish a movie no matter how bad I think it is, since I had already invested some time into it. KBVol1 is one of the few I haven't been able to.

Wait till you get to Volume 2. Volume 1 was a breeze to get through as opposed to this one.

masbrad 02-15-05 12:45 AM

There is only one movie that I have never been able to get all the way through. Chariots of Fire. I fell assleep the first 5 times i watched that and subsequent attempts over the years always have the same affect. Out like a light. Maybe I should buy the DVD as a sleep aid : )

Charlie Goose 02-15-05 11:24 AM

Somehow I get the impression that nobody here is getting enough sleep at night, we all keep passing out while watching movies. :)

SpaceBoy 02-15-05 11:40 AM

I would say SharkTale, I've been watching it off an on over a 2 week span, prob only like 4-5 days of watching any parts of it.. Just not enjoying it much, and typically like the shrek type movies..

cross 02-15-05 12:22 PM

I started Goodfellas and Das Boot a couple years ago. Both were really good for the hour or so that I watched, but something came up and I had to turn it off. Never got around to go back to finish it.
