I wish Sony had advertised House of Flying Daggers a little better. Even I didn't know it was finally getting a wider release this weekend, until I checked Cinemark.com to see what was showing locally, and I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about upcoming releases. I went to see it on Saturday afternoon, and four other people were there, two of whom left in the first five minutes.

It will make it's money back in overseas sales. add with dvd take in and any bump that it gets from the awards season, it will make its money back and then some.

It's tracking on par with Gangs of New York. Seeing as it'll probably be a bigger awards movie than that one, I would expect it to end up around 80-100 mil in the end. While it's no mega blockbuster, it's hard to say it's a disapointment because I doubt Miramax expected it to really do any better than that. It'll be interesting to see what awards do for that movie. Recall that it's a movie that's never been in more than 2,000 theaters, which is small for a movie that big.

Unless awards for The Aviator lead to a wider release I don't see it making that much more money. DVDs always make up for poor box office receipts but then again, studios now have their own expectations for DVD sales and The Aviator will probably not live up to those.

I was really hoping that House of Flying Daggers would pull through with more than just 1.7 million for its first weekend in wide release.
I would also like very much to see Hotel Rwanda in wide release because it's such a powerful movie that needs to be seen.

The 110 mil price tag is not all Miramax. Reports peg their investment at 40-50% of that number.
I think AVIATOR is doing rather well, considering the difficult subject matter and the heavy competition. Audiences are actually seeking it out.
So no, it's not financially failing.
