Hmmm...all of these are pretty "known" titles to me. Here are some recommendations of otherwise "unknown" films":

DEALER (Benedek Flieghauf)
TONY TAKITANI (Ichikawa Jun)
TWO GREAT SHEEP (Liu Hao)
THIS CHARMING GIRL (Lee Yoon-Ki)
LOS MUERTOS (Lisandro Alonso)
THE SOUP, ONE MORNING (Takahashi Izumi) - this one isn't even listed on IMDB!

Yeah - Royal t-Baums was a piece of shit. Your point? Oh, what - I like some movies that you think are stupid or haven't seen and I dislike your favorite movie so I'm some sort of idiot? Go to AICN message boards if you wanna dump on someone's taste in films.

Anyone seen "Dance With the Devil" aka "Perdita Durango"? Its a really mental road movie staring Javier Bardem, James Gandolfini and Rosie Perez. Its written by Barry Gifford who co-wrote Wild At Heart with David Lynch. Isabella Rosellini's character in Wild At Heart is also named Perdita Durango, so I suppose its a parallel sequel of sorts. You can get this movie dirt cheap on deepdiscountdvd.

Kikujiro or anything else by Takeshi Kitano

I had you posting in this thread at #20 in the pool... you cost me 5 bucks.

;)

That said, these are all slow/dull drawn-out dramas aren't they? Not exactly what the OP was asking for, but a couple of these look interesting to me. One of em was on my list to check out. Do you frequent indie film festivals or something?

Grimfarrow 12-28-04 04:16 PM

Yes, they are all "slow/dull drawn-out dramas", except for TWO GREAT SHEEP, which is actually quite comic.

Not only do I frequent indie film festivals, but I also happen to work for a few of 'em. That's how I get to view films in SUNDANCE '05 competitions first (eg. TONY TAKITANI).

Sessa17 12-28-04 05:10 PM

Does anyone actually read what the guy who started this thread wrote? B/c most are naming movies that are nowhere near what he is looking for.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/15...1.LZZZZZZZ.gif - This definitely fits your "b-rated" request. Trust me, this movie kicks all types of ass. Nobody has heard of this movie & it is SOOOO underrated. Such a great fun, hidden gem.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg - Film geeks have heard of it but anyone else probably hasn't. If you haven't seen it already it's a safet bet you will love it.

csim.. if you're still reading, perhaps it would be helpful if you reminded everyone that you were hoping for some action/sci-fi B movie type recommendations along the lines of Equalibrium and Returner or mention which suggestions that are useful to you.

Fincher Fan 12-30-04 09:47 AM

The Twins Effect.

Oh, and Sessa17, nobody knows of Mean Guns for a good reason! That's one of the worst pieces of dreck I've either had the misfortune of watching.

Funny, that's my feelings on The Twins Effect.

Mean Guns rules. It's ultra low budget & fun, plus the concept is cool, dozens of criminals being trapped in a warehouse, a bunch of weapons are dumped on the floor & they are forced to kill each other.

Maybe he wasn't. Maybe he was just looking for movies in general the people haven't heard about and those were the two he had thought of. If he comes back to this thread and says that's what he was looking for, then you all can keep helping him out by saying what he "really" wanted.

Dudikoff 12-31-04 12:22 AM

In July & Run Lola Run, both starring Moritz Bleibtreu. Run Lola Run is in interesting movie about fate/destiny and In July is pretty straight forward love story.

Human Traffic It's about a group of ravers in London. Don't be turned away by the topic because it's a really fun movie and the characters are really "characters."

Love Actually I love ensemble English casts where the multiple stories all ties together at the end.

Bubba Ho-Tep Definitely B-movie material about elderly Elvis and a black JFK fighting a mummy. Academy Award winning actor Bruce Campbell stars.

There's a mix of fairly unknown (by the avg. joe) flicks for you to check out.

Fok 12-31-04 02:02 AM

The Commitments

eedoon 12-31-04 08:28 AM

Besides lots of the movies already been mentioned:

Narc

The Convent
- Kinda cheesy and campy, but in a good way.

Made

And I do think that more people should watch The Iron Giant.
