Hmm.. I'll give this a try. I didn't know dvd releases count from the previous year. I would think this is solely based on theater experiences.

Anyways, onto the months in which I've seen a film in a theater.

JANUARY
Million Dollar Baby
Rating: 8/10
Very good story, very subtle and didn't give you the happy ending. Best paced movie by Clint yet (as he has a bad habit of really taking too much time to draw things out.) Wonderful performence by Swank, Clint and Morgan at their usual best. Interesting cinematography and a better score than usual from Clint.

FEBRUARY
Hitch
Rating: 7/10
Sure it's the same old Will Smith type character and it's a cliche story but I happened to like it. And Will didn't go too over the top.

Boogeyman
Rating: 4/10
Good attempt, but it's just that... an attempt. Could do without the scare using loud noise tactics.

Constantine
Rating: 7/10
I stopped reading/collecting comics before Hellblazer was released so I went into this without any expectations. Ended up enjoying it. Kind of Johnny Mneumonic meets Dogma.

Imaginary Heroes
Rating: 7/10
Solid script and directorial debut for Dan Harris about a dysfunctional family dealing with a suicide. Great performance by Sigourney Weaver. Starts off slow, but picks up as you learn more about the characters.

Be Cool
Rating: 8/10
Really enjoyed this quick trip thru the music industry and the Rock and Vince Vaughn had me Christina Milian was smokin' hot.

MARCH
Man of the House
Rating: 6.5/10
Pretty fun movie. Just moved along rather quickly to establish everything and everyone. Christina Milian was smokin' hot.

Steamboy (dubbed version)
Rating: 6.5/10
Top notch animation. Scenery was superb. A little different that usual anime fare since this is set in the UK. But I wish to see the original Japanese version. It seemed as if there were some cuts trimmed or just plain, bad editing.

APRIL
Kung Fu Hustle
Rating: 7/10
I think Shaolin Soccer and God of Cookery are better movies. Not too crazy about the story, but Chow has done a much better job integrating the various visual effects. Lots of little spoofs and homages. Odd to see the blood toned down in the US theatrical release eventhough it carries an R rating.

Sin City
Rating: 6.5/10
While I loved the visuals, some of the dialog is just over the top, pulp noir. I think the dialog is a fine fit for the comic books, but it just doesn't flow as smoothly here. Very fine film in terms of film making.

The Upside of Anger
Rating: 7.5/10
Wonderful performance by Joan Allen and a fine ending of Costner's baseball career roles. Supporting cast is great too, with Erika Christiansen and Keri Russell looking really good.

Miss Congenialty II: Armed and Fabulous
Rating: 6.5/10
Having not seen the first one (but knowing the basic premise) this was funny enough to make me giggle. I didn't see enough of Sandra in her tough gal mode to make the distinction and Diedrich Bader was really funny as her stylist. Lethal Weapon with girls.

MAY
XXX: State of the Union
Rating: 6/10
Not bad but Cube isn't leading man material and can't pull this off like Damon does with the Jason Bourne. The action is ok, th eopnening sequence is pretty cool, but problems with the plot at the end and horrible effects by ILM kind of ruin the whole experience.

Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Rating: 7/10 * First Viewing
Lucas has a terrible time writing dialogue. I think the acting is still a bit wooden. But the visual overload and action sequences make it enjoyable. Will watch this a few more times for it to set in and will review again at a later date.

JULY
War of the Worlds
Rating: 5/10
Boring. While Cruise had a solid performance, the film fell flat for me. I prefer the original movie (having never read the book). I just have a deeper fondness for the original. Plus the aliens were a little too ID4-ish for me that it took me out of the movie.

Fantastic Four
Rating: 6/10
If it weren't for Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis, I would've really hated this movie. And I believe Alba as a Geneticist about as much as I believe Denise Richards and a Nuclear Physicist. Thank god I can tune out her acting and just watch her looking bodacious. Bad visuals, bad script, and changing Ben's and Doom's backgrounds didn't do that much for me.

Longest Yard
Rating: 6.5/10
I'm not too keen on semi-serious Adam (other than Punch Drunk Love). I just think he's losing his appeal. He did a fairly good job but there was something missing. The football sequences are fine, hard hitting action, but something just didn't take it to the next level to make it more funny or enjoyable.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Rating: 8/10
I really enjoyed this movie. Pitt and Jolie have good chemistry together and I really like Doug Liman's action directing. Not much that's bad in this film. I thought it was well paced. Almost a When Harry Met Sally meets War of the Roses.

Batman Begins
Rating: 7/10
I'm really torn. I liked this movie, but I didn't like it at the same time. And I still contend that my choice of Bruce Wayne is Michael Keaton. Bale did a good job, but damn_he moves is mouth a lot when he's talking in the cowl. And Bruce turns into a Playboy overnight and his disappearance isn't questioned? I guess I'm still trying to comprehend why Wong Kar Wai is such a highly touted director. It was an interesting movie. I have In the Mood for Love on DVD, but haven't watched it yet. Some of the visual styles are nicely done while others aren't. Slow paced movie much like some of Clint Eastwood's directing. Ziyi Zhang

The Wedding Crashers

I haven't laughed this much in a long time. Vaughn is perfect. His monologue at the beginning about casual dating was just rofl. Wilson was ok as the sensitive guy, but Vaughn really made the movie. Not as over the top as his character in Be Cool, but certainly just as memorable. Doesn't get a perfect 10 because of the tease of Jane Seymore. Kinda left her character with no closure.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

A really good film about understanding faith and belief in God and the devil. A solid courtroom drama with great acting performances by Wilkinson and Scott. Only a couple of cliched scenes prevented this from being better. Definately not a horror flick.

Favreau does a great job visually capturing the space adventure. He does his best with the kids but I felt their growth to be a little forced. Fun and he moves right into the action so you;re not distracted by the lack of big named talent.

DECEMBER
Memoirs of a Geisha
Rating: 7/10
Visually, this film is stunning. The story, well... it's cliched. The music... borrowed from Hero, HoFD and CTHD. The acting... I've seen these performances before... nothing new from Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Watanabe. The ending, you can see coming a mile away. Yet, it's still a nice film.

Longer than it needed to be. Fine performances by Kong and Naomi. CG integration with live action needed some smoothing also.

Fun with Dick and Jane
Rating: 6/10
Decent movie, felt it should have been a darker comedy (more Cable Guy than the combo Liar,Liar Truman Show), but it's ok.

2005 Film List (out of 4 stars)

01. Grizzly Man - ****
Poetic and philosophically poignant film about a man who looked into the abyss and saw himself. Where most of us would leave it at that, he dove right in. Nobody quite does a documentary like Werner Herzog; a masterpiece.

02. Nobody Knows - ***1/2
A beautifully shot and moving portrait of familial love and responsibility. I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie that better captures the world through the eyes of a child. The performances are breathtakingly flawless; these kids aren't acting, they're being (Yûya Yagira, the 14-year-old Cannes Best Actor winner was well deserved). Never cloying or precious, and never settling for easy answers, the film fittingly glides by as an exploration rather than a narration. If only it were 30 minutes shorter, I might be using the M-word.

03. Rize - ***1/2
Beautifully photographed and compellingly told story of "krumping," an underground dance movement born from the same seed as hip-hop, and yes, punk. What is most convincing is the way LaChapelle weaves the characters' personal battles with the overall tapestry of the community, culminating in a new art movement that is all at once a violent personal cartharsis and an intense form of reactionary protest. If at times it seems a bit on the nose, its earnestness is never lost. Vital.

04. Constantine - ***1/2
Tour-de-force of sound and color. Keanu does his best Keanu impression, but you have to hand it to him: he looks damn good in a designer black suit. Plot is incomprehensible; at one point, I just stopped trying to follow and let the images and sounds wash over me. The representations of Gabriel and Satan were unpredictable, provocative, and surreal. I'd much rather start seeing these comic book films done with interestingly original flair like this than the cookie-cutter Hollywood-pandering schmalz that is becoming more regular. Unless an established auteur is involved (Raimi, Nolan, etc.), these films should be made by someone who can maintain the spirit of comic books: creativity, stupid.

05. Kung Fu Hustle - ***
Wild and fun, an original vision made up of past remnants. Not to take away anything from Tarantino, but he's no longer the only reflexively-built pastiche filmmaker on the block. Would have liked to see more of Lollipop Girl.

06. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room - ***
Sometimes truth is more unbelievable than fiction. I don't know which is more galling: what they did, or the condescending arrogance with which they did it.

07. The Balled of Jack and Rose - ***
Full of potent symbols and ideas, Ballad of Jack and Rose is an incredibly earnest but somewhat awkward tale of the impossibility of maintaining an idealized life in an ever "progressing" world. Daniel Day Lewis is electric, and the direction by Rebecca Miller is haunting and lyrical. Not quite the success it thinks it is, but you have to admire the ambition.

08. Fever Pitch - ***
The Ferrelly Brothers are the smartest comedy directors in mainstream Hollywood. Rousing and truthful, with much to say about our need and ability to construct cultural event bonding in the absence of the family unit, and how the manner in which is still determined by good 'ole class structure. Great dialogue and characters; feels like a more breezy Woody Allen.

09. Elektra - ***
More moody and character-driven than the usual comic book fare, I was instantly impressed by the simple, stripped-down story, which relied more on archetypal narrative points than hack-screenwriter conceits. I also was pleased with the old fashioned approach, opting for a more classical aesthetic than cartoonish video game fetishness. Garner scowls through most of her performance, and her costume is wretched, but it's somewhat refreshing to see a female character in her position not be completely fetishized or sexed up; her vulnerable tomboy persona even has quirky OCD ticks. Ultimately, the film's main tension seemed to resonate from the almost subversive conflict of an individualistic woman trying to find some semblance of refuge in today's man-eat-man, hi-tech corporate world- if it is even possible for a woman to have a successful role as both a nurturer and a hunter, something which our society often demands from them. And the guy with the tattoos is fucking cool.

10. It's All Gone Pete Tong - ***
Goofy Trainspotting-wannabe druggie film takes an abrupt turn halfway into a sincere comment on the transitive power of music and art. Anchored by an energized and charismatic Paul Kaye, the film succeeds because he can make his detestable character seem likable. If that isn't the mark of a great actor, I don't know what is. Beautiful colors and creative set design, with strong supporting work by Mike Wilmot as the shit-eating manager. Try to stick with it through the forced first act.

11. Murderball - ***
Brutally honest and unflinching portrait of quadriplegics' will to continue life as best they can. Slightly sentimental picture of the game itself. Still very moving. Original score is very effective.

12. House of D - ***
Cut off the awkward and forced bookends, and you have a convincingly gawky portrait of a teenager trying to find his way, made compelling by the fantastic performance by Anton Yelchin. He made the entire film; I will see whatever he is in next, no questions asked. Yeah, a lot of it is hokey, but so what.

13. Rory O’Shea Was Here - ***
James McAvoy should be a star.

14. Vodka Lemon - ***
A very small film that paints a bleak portrait of an even smaller area in the world that probably shouldn't exist. Contains three moments of absolute transcendent brilliance.

15. The Devil's Rejects - ***
Wild, unhinged, and dirty, Rob Zombie should have been the one to direct the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. At times a little too goofy for it's own good, Rob could benefit to use a tad bit of focus and restraint. Having said that, you get the feeling the guy made exactly the film he set out to make, and in this day and age he deserves kudos for that. Maybe not a great film, but definitely not a boring one. He just needs to stop casting his uncharismatic wife in lead roles.

16. Thumbsucker - **1/2
The tagline reads "I really liked that the film sucked." Which is definitely a risk, considering the level of irony involved is not as deep as the marketing honchos might think. Interesting jumble of themes and motifs that never really come together into anything substantial. There are a lot of ideas floating around, but Mike Mills, the writer/director, doesn't know quite what to do with them. But Lou Pucci could be the next Johnny Depp, Tilda Swinton and Vincent D'Onofrio are very good, and Chase Offerle turns a thankless role into something memorable.

17. Sahara - **
Matthew McConaughey is the most dashing movie star that isn't. Interesting how the script is infused with a dose of politically-aware worldview ("No one cares about Africa"), yet is oblivious to the arrogant third-world-as-white-man's-playground conceit. Nice photography, incomprehensible plot.

18. Hustle & Flow - *1/2
Simultaneously too pompous (this is the black experience) and safe(a non-abusive pimp with a heart of gold) to be enjoyed as pulp, the film carries the dangerous message that success is grounded only by playing the game by the rules already in place: to perpetuate your own stereotypes. Despite that electric scene where the first beat is created, and Terrence Howard's star turn, the film doesn't have a fresh idea in it's head. If anything, the film proves (on many levels) that by giving them exactly what they want, and what they expect, you too can be a success. Which is depressing as hell.

The 40 Year Old Virgin - Hilarious, I couldn't believe it was that funny.
The Wedding Crashers - Very funny. I did expect more crashing though. Vince Vaughn was so crazy. It was weird to see Owen Wilson acting a little more sedate & sort of morose though.

Waiting - Funny & really shows what it's like to put up with the public. I wish Dane Cook had a bigger role though. That kid from Jeepers Creepers is getting cute.
Walk the Line - So good it turned by sister into a Johnny Cash fan. Joaquin Phoenix was adorable every time he said "I'm Johnny Cash".
Sin City - I really liked this movie. I just had to get past the implausibility of the invincible characters. The only thing I would have added is more sex.
Constantine- I didn't know much about this movie going in. I'm an aethiest, but I still find some movies like this interesting. The detractor for me was Gavin Rossdale (who I used to love in '90s when he was in Bush). I found him annoying & not as attractive as he used to be.
The Man With The Screaming Brain - This was really funny. Luckily I get to see it again soon. I saw it at a Bruce Campbell screening & he really watched the audience to see what they thought, which shows he cares.

Deuce Bigaelow: European Gigolo - Very, very funny.
Aeon Flux - Better than I expected. I loved the Stuart Townsend cameo in the beginning. It had a plot & Jonny Lee Miller.
Land of the Dead- I thought that the evolving zombie thing was interesting. I was happy to see Leguizamo in a fun movie. Dennis Hopper has never been less threatening though.
The Devil's Rejects- It was about as good I expected it to be. I don't know why they couldn't have one good looking guy in it though. They have Rob Zombie's wife for the guys.
The Skeleton Key - Fun movie with a good twisty ending. I wish there had been more Peter Sarsgaard though.

In Her Shoes - It wasn't what I expected after reading the book. Cameron Diaz didn't really inhabit the Maggie character. I liked that they changed Rose's bf to the cute guy from Conrad Bloom, as opposed to the strange looking guy mentioned in the book.
The Ringer - I saw this with my sister, because it looked sort of funny & we'd decided that Johnny Knoxville was actually hot after we saw the trailer. It wasn't as funny I expected though.
The Island - I thought it was pretty good. However this is my least favorite Scarlett Johansson performance. I was happy to see Steve Buscemi appear in it.

The Transporter 2 - Jason Statham's still hot, but I definitely prefer the original. It had a child storyline, uck & was set in America.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - This was okay & fun in parts, but not as good I expected.
The Wedding Date - Okay, but could have been a lot better. There wasn't much chemistry between the leads. Dermot Mulrooney looked great though.

The Brother's Grim - The coolest part of the movie was when a character threw something at the screen & the projector stopped running. Before that I was ready to fall asleep.
Elektra - Ugh, I just wanted a fun action movie, but this didn't cut it for me. Garner was too dreary, Visjnic was underused & Stamp made me laugh. I would have liked to see this done differently with the girl becoming Garner's apprentice early on.

Red Eye - Gets a 2 only because the last 20 minutes were bearable.
