Picking which one is better is a tough job but I feel pretty comfortable stating that LOTR has more depth to it than Star Wars. Of course, Tolkien actually had a fluid thought while writing it, whereas Lucas kind of winged it.
To tell you the truth, I'm amazed the Star Wars legacy is as good as it is seeing that it wasn't a fully flushed complete idea from a start. They have kind of made it up as they went.
I like both of them greatly and I have no reasons to try to demand a final solution in choosing one over the other.
